------------->BEST ELECTRIC GUITAR BRAND????

Unread post by sticksANDstrings » Sat Aug 02, 2003 4:51 pm

It's me again.....What do you guys think is the best brand of electric guitar? (Gibson or Fender) I know that a lot of famous musician's have played both brands over the past half century so is it just a matter of personal taste? I recently went to the Gibson electric guitar factory in Memphis, TN (DOWN AROUND BEALE STREET BABY!!!!!) and it seems to me that Gibson makes EXTREMELY high quality guitars and are more concerned with sound and playability that looks/style. After what I saw at the factory, I'm REALLY starting to lean towards a mid-priced Gibson. Is there anything that Fenders have over Gibsons?

here's my thoughts...

overall i think gibson has the better tone and playablilty, but only by a slight margin... i would choose fender over gibson for one reason... reliability. in my experience of what i've played, gibsons aren't as reliable and always get out of tune very easily. this is true for the low end of each brand, but even the higher end gibsons have this quality

but overall, the two brand are neck in neck for winning my vote...

i went to the gibson showcase in TN a while back. i played their acoustics and i wasnt impressed.

anyway, gibsons have a better tone and look IMO... i played a classic last night that sounded amazing through the 350 watt marshall mode 4 half stack :D . anyway, im not impressed with fenders (except for the eric clapton)

by the way why only fender and gibson? you can find better than that (ie Godin)

I have played a few Gibsons, and I love how the strings practically sit on the frets, but I have to go with a good ole fender. They just rock my socks.

I own a fender american strat..and my friend owns a gibson standard sg.
I like the action on the gibson, I could put that baby as low as humanly possible and no strings ran out on the frets, sadly a different story with the fender, but; I choose the tone in my fender over the tone in the SG, and my fender is just a little easier to play, though maybe that is because i've owned it/played it much longer than my friend's gibson. Pretty damn close though, love em both!

all personal taste, but coming from a Gibson owner (check my sig), the humbuckers just make an electric...but some argue that the single coil gives charm to songs...it is all preference...but I think the neck on a LP is easier to get around then a say strat...

if you wanna go Jazz:
Gibson Classic (i.e. a es 175) give the sweet jazz honeytone humbuckers...yet the LP will hold up nicely in jazz too...
Fender Strats can also get real jazzy with the single coil...

if you wanna go Rock:
Gibson Les Pauls own in my opinion...here the humbuckers really shine and shadow over any Fender model...
Fender Stratocasters you can get a decent edgey sound, but w/o the humbucker, you miss something IMO...

if you wanna go blues:
GIbson can go blues...check out B.B.King...
Fender can go blues as well...check out SRV (although he wold make any guitar sound good )
bottom line, both are awesome at the right time...I just think Gibson is most of that time ;)

I dont like their acoustics at all..
but in the electric category..its close but Gibson, better tone imo, the coming out of tune thing happens, but you can just return between songs. This is why tuners in stomp box form are well liked.

All I know is that I just recently downloaded a Zeppelin concert from 1975. Paige was playing a Gibson Les Paul and I swear to god, either that or a PRS will be my first electric. MAN that thing just sounded AMAZING. Of course, Jimmy Paige was playing it so ya know. Also, anyone wanna hear one of the best pieces of music ever.....Zeppelin B'ron Y-Ura-Stomp.....or something like that. MAN CAN PAIGE TEACH A GUITAR WHY IT WAS CREATED!!!
