tortex .50 (red) for acoustic and tortex .60 (orange) for electric.

I'm assuming you've seen how it looks, so you hold it by the curved handle at the top. At the bottom there are two grooves that are spaced the same distance as 3 strings (so in other words, the left groove can go on string 1, string 2 goes in between, and string 3 goes on the right groove). You press down on the strings with the grooves so that the second string is in the middle between the two grooves, which is where the electromagnetic impulses come from (this sits above string 2, but not on it). The pulses make string 2 vibrate like you were picking it, but it causes it to have the "violin" sound that you hear on the songs mentioned. There are also two modes on it, one for regular use, and one for harmonics - you switch it to that and it sends a different type of impulse to the string that allows the string to keep a harmonic going - you push against the string and tap like you would a harmonic and the ebow keeps playing that harmonic. Ebows cost $90 retail.

so you'd need an amp to get these effects right?

Nope, it really is vibrating the string just like you would with a pick. You can hear it fine unplugged.
