Seagull Guitars

Hi guys,

I was just wondering your opinions on the Seagull brand guitars (specifically the spruce top ones) with regards to getting that Dave sound?

Not exactly, IMO. One thing I didn't like about the Seagull S6+ when I tried one was the neck was a bit wider than standard. I went with a Martin DX1 instead (paid $380, new). The S6+ does sound very nice though.

I also have an S12+ and it has a similarly wide neck but as a 12 string it's fine. Great guitars for the money. Try one and if you like them go for it!

That's the only way about it! The good news is, you don't need to have "Dave's sound" (or one of his guitars) to have a great sounding guitar.

Basically, I'm building to the fact that Seagull does make good guitars but don't try one or especially pay for one expecting to sound just like Dave. There's more to a guitar than it's "Dave" sound quality. Try various brands and find something that sounds and plays a way that you're happy forking over the cash for.

FYI, most medium to high end guitars are typically made with spruce tops. Though I've played a few bad eggs, Seagull is a very good and underrated guitar. It's a good guitar for the money but if you absolutely have to sound like Dave you're just going to have to save the money and purchase a Martin HD-28, DM3MD, Taylor 714CE, or whatever else you see him play from time to time.

Give the seagulls a try, you might like them anyways!

seagull guitars are sick, the tops scratch real easy if you don't get the gloss but they sound awesome, the neck is kinda wide too but you get used to it after 5 minutes.

I agree. His unique style (read: mutes, slaps, etc...) is what really gives a "Dave" sound. I bet he could make a POS guitar sound good.

i agree to a point. dave has his own unique style of playing guitar, and once u get that down u can make probably most guitars sound similar to the way dave sounds. but dave himself cant make a POS guitar sound the same as a Taylor or Martin.

having said that i do agree that dave's style and technique are very important to recreating the "dave sound", but i think the type of guitar does have something to do with it.

btw, dave can probably make a POS sound much better than i can make a Taylor sound.

My first acoustic was a Seagull, S6 i think. The one I had definatley did not have the brightness that a Martin or a Taylor have. It had great bass and would sound great on songs like bartender or others where deep sound is a plus. But the highs just really didn't do it for me. I'm sure that every one varies to a degree so playing a few is the right thing to do. I did play and love my Seagull for 4 years, and there were days when I would pick up the Seagull instead of the Taylor I have. Hope this helps.

i have a seagull 12-string and it plays all the tom petty and led zepplin songs i'll ever need. it's a 12 string and so there's only a certain amount of songs you can play on it but in my opinion its a great sounding guitar. mine wasn't cheap either!!

for the money they are worth it in my opinion.

i have a Seagull S6 Spruce. i like it a lot. it does have the wider neck, which might be a little more difficult for some. but it feels and plays great. it's a well-crafted guitar. their homepage describes the entire building process they use, and choice of woods. in the under $400 price range i don't think you can go wrong picking this guitar, but preference is ultimately what matters most.

as for dmb playability, dm could make this guitar sing. it's great for percussive, rythmic strumming.

You also have to remember that even if you buy a 914ce or a DM3MD off the shelf, they're not going to sound quite like Dave's. There's so much custom work and modifications that go into those guitars.

I didn't like the Seagulls I played, btw. Don't know why, just didn't like the sound. I know it's silly, too, but I can't stand that headstock, either.

not only that but he also has thousands of dollars in equipment that he runs his guitar through....
