Well, a 100% (or full tuitiion scholarship) would only pay for school. I know in my case, I didnt have that kind of scholarship, but rather a few large ones from other sources and a couple grants. When all that adds up to more than your tuition, room, and bored is, they cut you a check for the remainder. It works that way anywhere I'm sure, and it isn't just scholarships. If you borrow the max amount of student loans and you go over your fees, that money is yours to keep as well (keep in mind it has to be paid back). I know when my brother went to college a few years back, he had a full tuition scholarship and scholarships from other sources that brought in a few thousand dollars a year on top of his full tuition scholarship from the university. Needless to say, he was making a salary of a few thousand dollars a year just for going to college (which was free too). Which is why all of you high school kids should know that it really does pay to do well. If you can manage to get Valedictorian and have high tests scores (over a 30 on the ACT here), in my home state your going to be making money. Just something to keep in mind.
this is why it cost me so much to go to school. this is why it cost everyone else accumulating debt so much. i don't mind disadvantaged kids getting full tuition, or smart kids being rewarded for their effort but being paid to go to school why i am putting 20,000 a year. that's just rediculous and i am pretty upset to hear that. i had a 4.2 GPA and because my stepdad has some money (that i can never touch) i get no aid. all i am eligible for is loans and i will have nearly 70,000 to pay back when i graduate.m98ter wrote:Well, a 100% (or full tuitiion scholarship) would only pay for school. normally you would have to report all your outside scholarships and grants to your school and then the government aid only pays the remainder. that's the way it is at purdue. they will pay living expenses so maybe that's what your talking about. i know i can take out loans for living expenses and that some of that money can be used to buy guitars too (which many of my friends have done)
frankly i would consider taking that extra money (beyond what you need to go to school) as stealing. even if it is "legal" or a loophole it is still wrong. to be paid to go to school while most students graduate with 50,000 in debt. that is just rediculous.

i totally agree. i have some friends who's parents own a business. well they were getting incredible amounts of money for school while i was taking out loans. the reason is with owning a business, you report less money as income and the like. im not saying i blame them and all that but they are seriously rackin it in. thats just how it goes i know but they are buying cars and the like on top of their living expenses when i cant take out enough in loans to cover mine. i know its just how it is but damn. seems like it could be spread around alittle better some how.
just call me jealous and bitter, drowning in debt and ramen. 8)

Well, in my case I am accumulating debt as well and barely getting by as it is, considering I go to school on grants, scholarships, and the bulk of it being loans. The case above was my brother's situation, and complain all you want, but he deserved every penny he got. He was valedictorian of his class and scored a 34 on his act....both of those are not easy acomplishments. Valedictorian got him a full scholarship to his school, and the ACT score got him a scholarship of $2000 a year. And the fact that he came from a slightly econiically disadvangatged family only added at the most another thousand dollars onto the sum of money he was receiving. Yes, I did buy a guitar with my leftover cash from my first year in school, but I wouldnt have got the oppurtunity to do that had I not worked my ass off in school to getting the scholarships that I did get. You make me sound as if I'm going to school on the governments dime, when thats not the case at all. Most of my tuition is payed through loans, and I probably dont get anymore than about $1800 in grants. And $20,000 a year....damn thats pricey........if your living on campus my school adds up to right around $12,000 in state. I just wanted to clarify that neither my brother or myself are living the high life on government grants. Its those extra scholarships that the both of us have gotten for doing well that push us above and beyond our tuition.grock wrote:this is why it cost me so much to go to school. this is why it cost everyone else accumulating debt so much. i don't mind disadvantaged kids getting full tuition, or smart kids being rewarded for their effort but being paid to go to school why i am putting 20,000 a year. that's just rediculous and i am pretty upset to hear that. i had a 4.2 GPA and because my stepdad has some money (that i can never touch) i get no aid. all i am eligible for is loans and i will have nearly 70,000 to pay back when i graduate.m98ter wrote:Well, a 100% (or full tuitiion scholarship) would only pay for school. Couldn't tell ya dude.....what I can say though, Is the better you do on your SAT's in the end the more likely you'll be receiving scholarship money.shane wrote:hey what about 4th place and since im not old enough to take the SATs a 1230 on the PSATs? and im only going into 10th grade?m98ter wrote:Well, a 100% (or full tuitiion scholarship) would only pay for school.
