Gloss or Not?

Unread post by msvader55 » Tue Jun 03, 2003 2:59 am

I'm about to purchase a new Segull guitar and I'm trying to decide if I should go with the M6 or M6 Gloss. I've heard from some people that the gloss will muffle the sound some but I've also heard that the gloss used by Segull let's the wood breath and still sounds great. Any advice?

Thanks

I own a Seagull S-6 anniversarie edition (It has gloss, along with some pretty flame maple sides and back). I would definitely recommend getting the glossed version, if you can. The primary reason for this is that it saves your top...especially if youre getting the cedar top. The thin laquer that seagull uses allows you to mark up the top SUPER fast, especially if you play aggressively (ie: dave.) I didnt notice much difference at all in tone, if any, between the glossed and non-gloss versions I tried. The extra protection the gloss finish provides is worth the added cost, imho.

Gloss IN NO WAY effects the sound. i think it makes the guitar beautiful. both my guitars are gloss. satin can be nice, but gloss is nicer.

I wanted to chime in and say that satin finishes have a serious downside.. over time you will buff the finish to a gloss with your hand or arm.. the only way to "repair" the finish is to buff the entire surface to a gloss, and then if you want the satin back, you can apply a satin finish. A gloss finish is much easier to maintain than a satin.

that happened to my acoustic. under the sound hole, the body where i rest my arm, and the back of the neck have all turned glossy.

i wonder if the neck on my 814 will do that...

I by no means an experience guitar refinisher.. but, something like 600 grit sandpaper or #0000 steel wool taken to a surface will dull it back to a satin.. do like a dozen passes on the surface. The thing to realize is that you can't "spot fix" a dulled finish because it is about impossible to match and you will notice a "halo" around the spot. I can't stand the feel of a glossy neck and I often take paper to the entire neck to get back to the satin feel.
