Do any of you own an Ovation guitar, if so are they good buys or a waste of money.

i dont own one but ive played about 4. 3 are very nice, and one just plain sucks. ive played a 12 string which was pretty nice, one that was a special edition, and a basic celebrity. those 3 played pretty well, and dont sound half bad.

I like ovations tone but they are built odd and the kinda ceramic backing is uncomfortable to me and slips from my playing position, guess I am used to pointy regular looking guitars = )

yeah i agree... ovations ARE NOT meant for sitting down. they need to be played standing up with a strap or else they can just slide right out of your lap.

i like the plastic back guitars cuz they can be more punchy about their tone and usually the electronics in them are pretty good. i played an ovation through a slight distortion and it sounded pretty wicked. you can just get away with a lot more elctronics with one of these.

but i wouldn't buy one to play acoustic music.

Ive tried many ovations, and I think they just lack creativity in their tone (I don't know how to express it). I just don't like their voice, but if I were ever going to get an ovation, I'd definately get the ovation 12 string. Thats a nice guitar

SHOCKING!

Unread post by CPTino3001 » Thu May 29, 2003 7:14 pm

I know this will come as a shock to some of you, but Dave actually used to play Ovations before he moved to the Taylors/Chet Atkins...

I downloaded a very old video of Two Step that the band played in some park. Besides the fact that there were only like 20 people there, Dave played an Ovation, and had a second on stage...

It was a major shock for me, but I could see where being a struggling musician (at the time) would cause one to play such a guitar...
