any suggestions on a guitar for me?

Unread post by barcode » Tue Apr 29, 2003 9:08 pm

well, i'm finally done University and making some decent quid...thus, i'm gonna replace my craptacular acoustic with a decent acoustic/electric, however i have NO idea what i should get...my price range is $500-1000 Canadian (about 350-700 American)...what should i be looking at? My plan is to take the better part of thursday and hit the local music stores to get my feet wet, so any prompt responses are very much appreciated! :)

wow, craptacular. im gonna have to use that one. lets see... up to $700... hmm... theres martins you can get for that price, but i havent heard good things... im not the biggest fan of martins to begin with, so im biased. youll have to ask someone who isnt too opinionated between the 2. a couple of my friends have ovations (one has the celebrity or something like that that went for ~$600 and it sounds pretty good), wouldnt really recommend anything epiphone... heard some good stuff about takamines... umm.. just look around at whatevers there :)

I'd say this: Seriously look at used guitars. If you want brand new, Takamines at that price range that I've played have all been awesome, especially plugged in. Dont discount your fellow Canadians at Seagull (Or their sister companies: Simon&Patrick or Art&Lutherie) though either...their tone rivals that of way more expensive brands. Just a few suggestions. DmbfanJason has an electric acoustic martin (I forget which model, one of the lower ones) that he got for $500US that sounds wayyy sweet for the price. (I've heard it/played it in person.) Its a laminate top, but if I didnt tell you that you probably wouldnt have been able to tell. Just some thoughts...

I have about the same amount to spend on my guitar at the start of summer and I am going for a martin dm (mahogany dreadnaught), no pickup system though, I figure I can mik it if I ever have to.

You could wait and buy a Taylor 110, they're coming out in the Summer for sub-$700 methinks. It's a laminated side and back guitar with a solid top. Worth a look at.

Gibson Chet Atkins SST

Gotta love the geetars... :)

Pardon me? have you even READ the martin discussions? I have yet to find a *single* person that has a bad thing to say about the D-15's tone (my baby)... there are some people that criticize it's look without even seeing it in person... which I *really* don't understand... well whatever.

*Hugs his D-15*
