I use a boss ds1, it's a really good pedal. I'd suggest it

I've been putting a lot of opinion down lately so why stop now...i find distortion to be a bit generic. that's not the right word but i can't think of how to say it better. i think distortion tends to drown out the notes with odd harmonics so it's not very clear what you are playing and you run the risk of sounding like a giant wall of sound, instead of music. maybe there is just more art to using a distortion pedal right.

i'm a big fan of overdive and fuzz. it's hard for me to find a sound i don't like out of those.

this has to do a lot with how a fuzz distorts a signal compared to a distortion pedal. Distortion pedals have symmetric clipping which accentuates odd harmonics (which aren't as melodic) whhile fuzz uses asymetric clipping and accentuates the more melodic even harmonics. but don't worry about that.

I did some research (it's a bring day in the office) and found this "Fuzz is a distortion box with boosted bass before clipping. You can simulate fuzz on any rig by playing the neck pickup, with the tone control down all the way, picking near the neck -- these produce the most bass and least treble prior to the clipping stage. Definitive example: Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (big muff pie)."

so my reccomendation is the Big Muff Pi for sure. sounds like a good pedal.

That big muff pedal is INTENSE. A kid I used to play with used that pedal. The first time I heard him play he was doing some angry Drop D thing and he walked in front of the amp and I thought it was going to knock him over.

find an amp that does it well... i couldnt get the tone i wanted out of my little Marshall MG15CDR but my Traynor YCV80 is so easy to get the tone i want!

well isnt the marshall only 15 watts? ??

hmm
now i cant decide betweeen the big muff and the ds1

the bug muff is quite a bit more expensive and i broke the electronics on my acoustic today so that will probably damper my budget a bit

hmm

maybe i will get both eventually

I haven't used many pedals but the best distortion sound I've used was from a (dod I think..?) grunge pedal. I guess it really depends what sort of sound you're looking for, but the pedal I'm talking about gave a very heavy distortion sound without screwing around with the notes you're playing too much.
