A P.A. is larger than an amp, but unfortantely they are not always louder. Guitar amps are colored(tonewise) towards an electric guitar, where as a PA is suppossed to be colorless and amplify everything(especially vocals) very naturally, but unless you have a nice system this rarely happens.

If you have a nice large guitar amp, I suggest using that with a little mixer, and EQ untill you get a decent sound. If you need something more than that invest in a nice PA.

Man, you people have different setups than I'm used to seeing...that archtop is dead sexy though.

Heres my live rig

Peavey Firenza AX (Primary)
BC Rich Mockingbird (Secondary)
Kramer Strat Copy (Backup)
Hofner Acoustic-Electric
Fender Dreadnought
(I use DR strings exclusivly)

Amplifiers and Effects-
Polytone Brute III Amplifier spliced with a Trace Elliot 2x12
Digitech RP100
Dunlop Crybaby Wah Pedal

Other-
Planet Waves Cables, Dunlop Picks (.73), Heineken, and Camel Turkish Royals :P

I don't play Dave Matthews kinda stuff as you can probably tell, but I love the band like crazy, amazing music and Dave is a big influence on my acoustic playing...damnit I want that Archtop

Correct me if I'm wrong... but aren't the designs of many acoustic amps intended for coffee-shop type venues? I have a Kustom 60 Watt acoustic amp, for example, that has both an instrument and mic input. I've used the amp to play at a coffee shop and it seems to do the job. Even though my Taylor 514ce has a pickup, my other guitar (Michael Kelly in an alternate tuning) doesn't, so I played my instruments through a Shure SM57 mic (I just positioned the mic in front of the guitar where I was sitting). I think I got a pretty natural sound that way... it seemed to work well in the low-key venue. Then, I used an SM58 as the vocal mic. One thing I did was as follows: I ran the vocal mic into the instrument input, and the guitar mic into the vocal input. The reason I did that is because on my amp, there are effects for the instrument input such as 'chorus', but not on the vocal input. I put a little 'chorus' then on my vocal mic... I think it made my vocals sound a bit fuller. Has anyone ever tried that? Any other thoughs on set-ups for solo singer-songwriter performances?

Peace.

I was talking about using an electric guitar amp(like a marshall, or a fender) for an acoustic. I completely forgot about acoustic amps, I know some people who have them that swear by their sound.

one of them is me!! i have a peavey ecoustic amp and i deifnitly swear by that mother fucker....it tends to blow out if you try anythign harsh but it is so clean and natural otherwise, i use my mic(very cheap and shitty need a new one deinfitly) and my martin in that amp and it tends to be fine, only problem is when i use delay on my vocals it tends to get feedback, anyone knwo anyway to get rid of that??

I finally got my equipment :D I ended up getting the Fishman Rare Earth acoustic pickup because it made the Matrix Natural pickups sound like SH**. A Sennheiser E835 microphone which ended up sounding MUCH better than the SM58 that I thought I was going to get. An Ibanez CS 9 Stereo Chorus Pedal because it killed the Boss counterpart :D A TubePre Preamp that was only $100 for the microphone. A Boss TU2 Chromatic Tuner Pedal. I wanted a compressor pedal really bad and unfortunately I tried out the popular Boss Compressor and was let down. I think I'm going to buy a Marshall ED1 Edward Compressor and I will officially be set with my live gig setup.

Those new E series Sennheiser's are the shit. I bought one instead of a
SM57 but I really need a nice pre-amp.
I'm not exactly sure what a compressor PEDAL is but if your in the market for a compressor I've heard great things about RNC (really nice compressor).

Yeah I was truly blown away by the Sennheiser  What I call the compressor pedal is a pedal that levels off the guitars volume, like some parts where my HD 28 gets a bit boomy, it will level off the volume so it's not allowed to drown out my voice. I'm really surprised that more people don't look into compressors cause the guys I know that use them sound 10x better with them in live performances.
