Need some advice here......

Unread post by Mulletman » Tue Mar 23, 2004 7:17 pm

Hi,
I'm new to the board obviously and I've been reading quite abit about views on equipment and such but I am currently in a bit of a dilemma as to what to do with my current equipment situation. I used to play in a death metal band (yeah I know.) so most of my electric equipment is geared toward that genre. Recently I've shed that and basically want to focus mainly on acoustic folk/blues/floydish stuff. I've been looking at picking up a Martin Dx-1 or something since I'm a college student and too poor to afford a higher end version.

The acoustic I currently own was passed down to me from my father it's a Yamaha FG-200 which after reading quite a few reviews and playing plently of guitars in music stores I really enjoy the sound of it. My question after all this reading is: since I like the action/sound of the FG-200 should I buy a high end pickup for it? Is it worth it? Or should I just save for awhile and focus just on getting a Martin? If so which model? unfortunately I can really only afford around the 500 - 550 range right now.
Thanks in advance for any advice you guys have to offer.

DO NOT get a martin if it's in the 500-600 price range.

Unless u get a really good deal..

Look at some other things like Alvarez or Takamine.

If you are pretty satisfied with your current guitar, stay with it and put in a nice pickup. Many people on here have raved about the B Band pickups. You can find a whole bunch of info on pickups at http://www.samusic.com and don't be afraid to email the guys about any questions you have.

Play some other guitars and if nothing really strikes you as a much better guitar than yours, stick with your current guitar.

After I got this Michael Kelly Legend guitar (still the legend series isn't up on the site, but should be up and announced in the next 2 months), I am just loving it! I wanted a Martin D-28 for some time, since I just loved the simplicity and the sound and feel from it. Now that I got this MK from a person on these boards (at a steal, since he got it at a steal, and I mean STEAL!), I have no urge to buy any other acoustic 6 strings, I don't want a martin, I just want this. Check out michaelkellyguitars.com

i completely agree, do NOT get a martin if you can only spend $500 on it unless you are getting a RIDICULOUSLY good deal you are just paying for the name.

i would recommend the Takamine EG540SC

it's the guitar i currently own and i love it to bits. its around $5-600 and it's worth every penny. unplugged it sounds great and it sound better than most other guitars i've played plugged in.
