Good Loop Pedal?

Unread post by taparoo » Thu Nov 19, 2009 7:37 pm

I'm interested in getting a loop pedal, and I know a few of you here have one, and some of you probably know more about it than me. I've been looking at the Boss RC20. I was wondering what kind you guys would recommend. Suggestions, gripes about certain pedals?

The RC-20 XL has the option to erase a new overdub on the fly by holding down the record pedal. I'm not sure the Digitech Jamman can do that. The Line 6 dl4 is your other option (the howie day pedal). Last I heard this pedal isn't built to last and the metal push buttons break a lot.
The deluxe is the Boss RC-50, but I've heard by many reviews that it is problematic with it's software and design and expensive ($500). If I were you, I'd test this one in the store if you are interested. The ultimate in looping tech is the Gibson Echoplex but these are even more expensive (around a grand) and hard to find. They can multiply loops, rearrange recorded phrases on the fly, along with many other loop manipulation features. It's basically teh shiz. If I were you, I'd shoot for the RC-20XL. It's basic but built like a tank. It also quantizes the loops for you so your timing doesn't have to be super exact. I think the Jamman does this too, but it requires an SD chip to store it's loops, which you have to buy separately for a larger size memory bank. The RC20 isn't expandable in memory like this but I'm pretty sure it can store a ridiculous amount of time (2 hours maybe?) Hope that helps.

Wooten uses the RC20. I have the JamMan, but I'm probably going to ask for the Boss for christmas.

Do any of you own a Boss RC-2? It looks like it's basically the same thing as the RC-20XL, minus the reverse phrase feature and aux input.

I don't own one but from my understanding, to stop a loop, you have to hold the pedal down for three seconds or so. This can be troublesome if you wanna stop right on the down beat for a live performance.

I've heard the RC-2 is not good.

So I went for the JamMan. I've been having so much fun with it. It's the first time in a while I've actually played for hours, just messing around with it. This thing is awesome.

I have a Line6 DL-4 and like it. Definitely doesn't have the features of the other loopers, but it's the best for live performances IMO

i like my boss RC-20xl quite a bit.

if anyone really wants to take the time to work at learning how to really use it, or uses a ton of vocal loops, the rc 50 is really incredible.

I have an RC-20XL. It is actually pretty damn cool and easy to use. I can't exactly remember, but I think the RC-2 isn't as easy to use in certain situations because of the single pedal vs dual pedal. The only thing that I'm pissed off about is that I used mine for a couple hours and it is all F'd up. I take the best care of all of my stuff and BOSS is supposed to be indestructable. Yet mine is in the shop now. I'm pretty sure that it's just a matter of my bad luck. Even still, I'd say grab one. Loop some rhythm and solo over top, build up some crazy beats, the options are all there. I actually just bought and LS-2 line selector from BOSS so that I can add my keyboard to my mix. Haven't been able to use it yet, but.. I'm also planning using some baritone action in there.

Knowing how to choose the best loop pedal can be a challenge with so many great choices these days from companies like Boss, Digitech, Line 6, Akai, and others. Some of our favorites are the DigiTech HardWire DL-8, Boss RC-2, and the Akai Professional E2 Headrush which all have great record times, durability, and other fun features.
