Amp Suggestions

Unread post by MattyTrane » Wed Jun 25, 2008 1:09 am

Ive got about a 1000$ to spend on an amp. I play mostly jazz stuff but really need some versatility for playing some lead stuff. I know very little about amps and none of the jargon in comparisons means anything to me really.

The only thing I know I like is this:

Any other suggestions?

Try out some tube amps at your guitar store. Fender makes some good ones, Mad Cat and Orange are also favorites of mine. They'll generally cover the tones you mentioned you're looking for.
The link you have, the amp seems pretty decent. But I recommend to try it out- make sure the clean channel is really good.

Orange amps are the shit.

Expensive but worth it: Mesa Boogie, Soldano

Fender makes good and bad amps, just play a bunch and pick out your favorite, I highly recommend tube amps though. Stay far away from digital and solid state, although I have a solid state Marshall amp that sounds GREAT.

I think orange is out, I can tell they're way too expensive.

Doing some reearch... I hear nothing but fantastic things about orange amps. Kahn do you think I could get a good jazz tone out it though? Biggest problem is I think I could only afford a small cab at best. Im only looking to spend 1.5k maximum. They also have something called a Tiny Terror, but I dont think thats worth it really.
Any thoughts?

I played an Orange amp today actually while at the ma and pa guitar store around here. It's a very versatile and friendly tone. I plugged a tele in there and got a nice blues tone in it. A jazz sound only seems natural through it.

I'm a big fan of Marshall's combos. You could get a nice one for $1000. Even their solid states sound great. The crunch you get from one of their amps is amazing.

If you're looking for mild overdrive/cleaner sounds, Fenders might be a better bet. I used to have an Ultimate Chorus amp that was great for clean/chorus/mild OD sounds, but sounded like complete ass with a lot of distortion.

I'm a big fan of my Traynor amp. YCV80. If you don't need one that big, they have a great YCV40 as well.

Crunch isnt really important to me, I need good clean tone. Ive been looking at some fender stuff, its probably the most affordable, but I'm worried about it breaking.

Almost a year later and I'm leaning back to the crunchy Marshall side of things. Ive got a nice guitar processor that can give me versatility when I need it, but the crunch from a Marshall is just unmistakable. I think you can model a good clean tone a lot more easily, especially with a powerful amp.

The only thing that's bugging me is the cost.

How much are you wanting to spend?

I used to be obsessed with Marshall's, but I really don't desire one of them anymore heh.
