guitar picks
how long do you guys typically keep your guitar picks? I find after a few hours of use with my tortex .73 dunlops, I lose the woody, dry sound the pick produces. All thats left to my ears is a mellow tone with no definition. Just curious what some of your answers are!

I use Tortex .88? (the green ones). I dunno they are thicker and seem to last a while. More often than not though i seem to be just dropping the pick and using my fingers.
Do you play a lot of chords or notes? If you are playing notes, you might want to try a thicker pick.

Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Every once in a while I go through all my picks and throw out the ones that are really old and practically round. For the most part though I just pick a random pick and play. I use the Ultex .73s for the most part but I have a slew of random thickness Tortex picks that were stuck all over a guitar birthday cake a few years ago that I use too.

its interesting knowing what everyone elses views are regarding something as simple as a guitar pick. I asked cause like I said I find there is a difference in the sound. Its almost like a scraping sound i desire?? Whats the reason behind artists' using a pick holder on their mic stand with 5, 6, or 7 picks at concerts? I always thought it was for the same reason as I stated earlier. I could very well be wrong and im sure I am. Fill me in!

I mean sometimes i have seen artists have two different thicknesses of picks for changing between electric and acoustic guitars. As far as having 7-8 of them on the stand, thats just so that when you drop your pick you don't have to look like an ass and reach down to grab it.freshead16 wrote:its interesting knowing what everyone elses views are regarding something as simple as a guitar pick. Yet another reason I have pretty much given up on picks all together (at least on acoustic guitars), I tend to drop them.

interesting...yeah dropping picks is understandable. I have friends that can play superb without picks. Im sure you are one of them ahah. I just cant make it work. So hats off to you! I should just go buy 20 different kinds and experiment with them till I find one I like. I did it with strings, I spose I can do it with picks as well. Its cheap enough ahah.

Another reason for a pick holder is if you switch a lot between fingerpicking and using a pick. Marcus Eaton, for example, plays a song called Victims of What's Available starting with fingers and then switches to a pick mid-song. I have DVD where you can see him grab a pick quickly between notes.RunsWithBuffalo wrote:I mean sometimes i have seen artists have two different thicknesses of picks for changing between electric and acoustic guitars.
