#41 arrangment for marimba / guitar

Unread post by gregplaysguitar » Sat Jan 18, 2003 7:17 am

Me and a buddy pieced together a 41 cover for guitar/marimba/piano....it was a one take kind of thing, so there are a few mistakes but it turned out well over all. You can find it at:

Nowhere Radio / Gregerly

Any feedback would be welcome. We added a vamp in the middle that is not found anywere in the original 41 so don't be surprised.

Sorry, bud....not my taste. Now, don't get me wrong, musically it's fine and you guys can play your instruments, but if we're strictly talking about a cover of #41 I didn't care for it. But that's just because I'm one that loves to hear people do covers of Dave that are right on. This was different right from the opening chords. But, hey, just one man's opinion.

I dig it. As a former percussionist, I fondly remember the hours that my best friend and I spent on trying to arrange some DMB stuff.

I think y'all did a pretty good job, and I'm always a sucker for marimba melodies.

It's different, but that ain't necessarily bad. :)

Hey Man - Do not listen to jagoffs like this...he's a fucking uncultured, intransigent buffoon!!!! This kicked ass bro!!!! And the quality of the recording was much/much improved from the last thing I heard of yours a couple days ago....it sounds like you have been working on that as well!!!

I was pleasantly surprised by this rendition, especially after reading the first 2 comments made about it....that just shows how people love to hate on stuff that makes them trepid i.e. something that forces them to look inwards and vis-à-vis their own self with the world around them....This makes most people feel inadequate and insecure so the first instinctive motion is to jettison and omit the thing which is responsible for this discomfort.....They accomplish this with animadversion.

Bro, keep it up!!!! Again, this was very nice!!!!

P.S. I voted very good!!!

Hey Winny, lighten up, man. The guy asked for an opinion and I think I gave a respectful response. I didn't bash it, I simply said it was not my taste. In fact I made a point to say that musically they sounded good, I just didn't take to it as a #41 cover. What the hell is wrong with that?

Please do explain how my comment shows I "love to hate on stuff" in general, or more simply, that I didn't like the recording.

I enjoyed it. I liked the slightly slower tempo, and the guitar was smooth and clean sounding. I have no idea what a marimba is but it reminded me of a xylophone :? but obviously sounded better than that would :) I like how it mimicked the line of melody of the vocal parts at times. I'm always up for all shapes and sizes of Dave cover songs. keep of the good work.

peace
good, and you?

thanks to all

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who gave a listen. I appreciate all your comments, good or bad. OH, and for Gravedigger, a marimba is basically set up like a keyboard, similar to a xylophone, but you use mallets and the keys themselvs are wood instead of metal. You strike the key and a sound is produced from a resonating metal tube underneath each key. I love the sound. Anyways, thanks again.

Heres a picture of a typical marimba:

great job

I like the miramba's! My friend is a percussionist looking at learning them and having him listening to this song made him finally start. It must have taken some time matching them with the vocals of dave, anyways GREAT work!

Amazing, thats a damn cool sounding cover. I think we need more covers like this. IronMike778, if the actual band had a marimbo, would it be your taste then?
Yes, I am Indian and I play the guitar. Believe It.

its a lit easier to learn marimba if you play piano, cuz its basically the same thing, its a lot harder to learn for percussionists who arent used to notes
Everybody always asks me how she's doing. Has she really lost her mind? I said "I couldn't tell you, I've lost mine."

love your stuff dude. my sister played for a marimba band in her high-school in Zimbabwe & it brings back good memories. Totally refreshing stuff dude. I love the way you 'jazzed' up the #41 chords from what we're used to - pretty cool.

Thanks, much apprieciate the comments. We did a long black veil cover also for guitar and marimba on the same site, but the 41 turned out better. Thanks for listening!

Greg, I thought it sounded pretty good. I can see how the Marimba's sound won't attract to everybodys preferences but it is unique & well done.
Although, I didn't hear too much of a chorus for the guitar part. Anyway, take care & post some more for us.
