3 tunes from my jazz combo

Unread post by Cor » Fri Mar 27, 2009 7:43 pm

A couple of weeks ago my jazz combo helped out some students in an audio production class and got to record 3 tunes. There is one straight ahead swing, one with a Latin feel, and a fusion tune. Figured maybe a person or two might listen. The first two were recorded live, and on the last one the bass and drums recorded together then me with the two saxes together. This isn't our usual drummer and when we did the tunes that used upright bass, he was not plugged in, only mic'ed, So you'll hear some tempo shifting that's pretty dramatic in the second tune. Of course, I'd appreciate comments/criticism.

I don't know the first thing about jazz, but I listened to Black Nile. It sounds good. You're a undoubtedly a talented player--keep it up, Cor.

The fusion tune was my favorite, though I wish there was a section that hung back a bit more for a change of pace, maybe a more contemplative bass solo?. What a great composition.

Once again, tenor man is  throughout.

The drums on Oleo are loud, but I assume these aren't mixed yet. Does that bass player do Keith Jarrett kinda shit during solos? I cant stand that guy.

I liked the interplay between you and the alto cat on his solo on Black Nile.

 Damn. I love Jarrett.

And he's not really doing the Jarrett thing per se; the bass player is singing what he's playing, Jarrett just makes random vocalizations most of the time. The reason we (I do it too usually, it's just inaudible here) do it is to make the connection from our head to our instrument and to make natural phrasing and allow rests; if you don't have the breath to sing it, why would you play it? A saxophonist can't play when he's out of breath, and that's what we're trying to mimic, I guess.

Thanks for listening guys! :)

His playing is fine I just think the blabbering is annoying. You can tell the bass guy is playing what hes singing, Im just not used to hearing people do it that loud

Gotcha. Jarrett is an idiosyncratic dude. that's for sure. Great player though.
