pat's garageband explorations

Unread post by dmbguitar718 » Mon Sep 29, 2008 4:50 pm

let me start off by saying that i am so against the use of MIDI it's not even funny. however, this semester i'm a music technology class where we're working with it, so i'm learning how fun it can be.

anyway, i pretty much have unlimited use of garageband and a MIDI interface, so I can create tracks in a breeze. i figured i'd make this thread to house my recordings.

our first assignment was to create a three minute recording of anything in garageband, which i hadn't used yet. it's a ridiculously easy program to use. i did a cover of andrew bird (and martin dosh's) "simple x" and took some artistic liberties:

and sorry, i mixed this on ipod headphones, so the bass is pretty heavy.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": As long as there's, you know, sex and drugs, I can do without the rock and roll.

I like it. Nice recording. Are you doing this by hand or entering in notes with a midi keyboard?

Don't hate midi. It is still the basis for a lot of music and is an incredibly powerful tool if used right. If you took this recording and added some real instrumentation on top of it, you would have a very solid sounding track. I love garageband because it lets me use midi and puts a lot of instruments I could never dream of playing in the realm of possibility. If only I could get it to play pedal steel guitar!
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?
