Cover: Make It Up

Unread post by Klondog » Mon Aug 11, 2008 3:01 pm

Hey all,
I thought it would be cool to post a cover of one of my favorite artists. The song is Make It Up by Joe Purdy. I know it's more than a bit rough, and also that I struggle with my voice at times, but I wanted to share anyway. Overall, I'm fairly happy with it and did it in one take. I apologize for the poor quality recording, as I don't have any sort of recording set up. I'd love to hear what you have to say. Critique away and enjoy

Edit: Here's the lyrics so it's a little easier to follow.

When a train comes, I don't know what to do
I'm leaving town, but I ain't leaving you
When I get down, I get these far away blues
and I don't wanna go back home

I could say I'm sorry if you think it would help
And I stand there, you're wishin' me well
and I cant think of nothing to say

I'm gonna write you a song
to tell you just how much I've been missing you
And I don't have to wait very long
and I'll be home dear
and I know that you've been crying at night
but you don't have to be lonesome 'cause
I'm gonna make it right
Make it up, make it up to you

We've been gone now for weeks maybe longer
and it's cold out and this current's gettin' stronger
and I called you but you just sat in that corner
just watching that telephone ring
Well baby pick up so I can hear your sweet voice
And I miss you, don't be sad anymore
And one day I'll walk through that door
and hold you in my arms

And I'm gonna write you a song
Tell you just how much I've been missing you
And I don't have to wait very long
and I'll be home dear
and I know that you've been... crying at night
You don't have to be lonesome 'cause
I'm gonna make it right
Make it up, make it up to you

not bad Klon - could have been your recording set up that you mentioned, but couldn't really hear you well/make out the words for the first few lines - sounds like you got stronger/more confident as you kept going which is a good sign - guitar sounded pretty solid throughout, not a whole lot to work on there - cool little song, maybe try being a little louder with the singing and the confidence will follow - nice work

^ mostly what he said. Perhaps it was your recording set (sounds like the built in mic on a macbook), but belt it out. And maybe put some variations in the guitar strumming (perhaps palm muting here and there) and you've got yourself a solid cover.

Thanks for listening, guys. I really appreciate the comments! I'm very comfortable with my playing (and I'm definitely gonna try to add in some variation when I re-record sometime). Any voice critiques aside from volume/confidence?

Hard to hear your voice over the guitar, but it sounds pretty good from what I can make out. Cool song dude

Matt - I agree with what others have said in that your voice is somewhat difficult to hear over the guitar. But that's just trial and error when you're not working with a real recording setup. Might want to consider buying a 4-track. Rhythm is decent but somewhat lacking with the chord changes. That will come with more practice. How long have you been playing?

A tip on the vocals. When you're going for a new note/range, just go for it. Don't waver your voice hoping to find the right key. Even if you're a little off, I think it's more pleasant to listen to than fluctuation.

Cool little song. Thanks for sharing and please keep posting.
-Brian

Be excellent to one another.
