New Recording- I Can't Let Go (Original) UPDATED

Unread post by ut4ever8 » Fri Jun 20, 2008 4:46 pm

This was kind of an experiment. It's my first time trying to record more than just one take of guitar and one take of vocals. It doesn't sound perfectly how I want it to by any means so I would appreciate critiques on any and everything. I'm pretty happy with how the song turned out itself but I'm not really a fan at all of my own voice so any tips on vocals are always extra appreciated. Thanks for all the help you all have given me. I just want to keep making progress.

Hey Ian, I liked it. Like you said, a bit rough, but it's got great potential. Reminds of Alexi Murdoch in it's simplicity, both in terms of the music and the vocal style. There are points during the verses where you sound like you're not quite sure what the melody is, but then you get to the chorus(?), and your voice comes through really strong, so it's fairly apparent that you've got the voice, just gotta work on the confidence and projection.

Thanks Tim. I'm brand new to the singing stuff and it is alot harder than it looks, I really appreciate the feedback. Any vocal hints on projection or is it pretty much just grow enough balls to at least pretend like Im confident in my voice? Thanks again bud

Confidence is a HUGE factor. You sing along with the radio? Sing your favorite songs when no one's listening? I'm sure you already know how to project, you just lack the confidence to do so with people listening. I'm not really one for tips because I just developed on my own, but confidence is definitely a huge part of it. I'm sure there are others here who can better help with specific points to work on. But just know that you DO have it, just grow some balls and do it.

Thanks Mark. Its not actually my first song. Ive written a few songs, Ive just never performed them for anyone or recorded them. I just started really trying to sing and I just got the recording equipment. This was my first time writing a song thats not just one guitar part, and one vocal part. I basically just messed around with the chorus. Thanks for all the help guys. I can't tell you guys enough how much I appreciate it.

confidence and ear training my man! your guitar kicks ass and the song has potential, but the singing needs a bit of work... but your guitar and writing is great, so just keep practicing and you'll have yourself a badass act to tour the world with. :) the tone of your voice is good, so you've already got that. everything else is just skill development.

Thanks alot man. Im definitely working on the voice thing as much as possible. I can hear as well as anyone else thats its off. My problem is I don't really know what to do to correct it the right way. Thats why I made the myspace. I just wanted to let you guys or anyone who knows what they're talking about for that matter, hear what Im doing and hopefully give me some ideas on how to get better. It has helped a ton though and I feel like its coming along at a reasonable pace. Still got a long way to go though. Thanks again. I really appreciate all the help and kind words.

maybe if you sent one of us the guitar track and let us sing it you could hear the differences?

I wouldn't mind doing that if someone really wants to do that. Thats not really what I meant though. I can hear in my head what I want the song to sound like, it just comes out sounding different. I always thought someone with a good ear could tell if Im struggling with certain areas for a certain reason, such as singing from the throat or what not and give specific guides to correct that... Does that make more sense?
