Cool Edit Pro question

Unread post by ut4ever8 » Sun Jun 01, 2008 10:27 pm

Now that Im finally set up with my equipment I need to learn how to use CEP better. The problem Ive already ran into is when I record, It is only recording out of one channel, the left Channel. If I pan to the right and hit play it wont play at all. Any help?

Ian, gimme a rundown on how you're set up.

There could be a ton of issues. The drivers might be flaky or it might be as simple as setting up the tracks to record correctly.

If you're recording with only one mic, convention sort of defaults to the left channel, but you can record a stereo track with just the left track data.

It also could be a simple playback issue.

Its only recording from the left too by the way. Only the top wave is doing anything during the recording so its not a playback issue right?

Alright, let's see what we might have.

Since you only have the one mic, it will want to record from the left channel.

Make sure you set the track to record in mono, as then it will only be one track.

The panning you deal with prior to mixdown. (Edit>Mixdown to file, iirc.) Toy with placement of guitar and vocal.

As far as the reverb goes (drawing from the other thread), CEP/Adobe Audition's built-in stuff is not awesome.

I recommend this stuff much more: http://www.hometracked.com/2007/01/11/b ... l-plugins/

The whole Hometracked blog is truly excellent.

Thanks Ryan. I figured out the channels last night. Should I just download all of those things on the hometrack site? how do I use them?

yeah, you have to record the track in mono if you're just using one mic. you can then create a crude stereo track (if you want to) by duplicating the mono track and hard panning each track to each side. then you can go further and add subtle effects to either side to make it sound like a nice (albeit fake) stereo track.

Using the plugins (and all digital effects for that matter) is just really a practice of trial and error.

As far as the download>install thing, it's really easy. Download them all or download just the ones you want to play with; I don't think they're really going anywhere.

They'll come in ZIP files (usually) with a ReadMe and the plug-in itself. All you have to do is unzip and put the plug-in in a folder. CEP/AA comes with a "VST Plugins" folder buried somewhere deep in the Program Files, but I created my own that's easier to reach because the user specifies in CEP/AA what the folder is.

Under the Edit View, go up top to Effects and there should be a VST drop-down, then a "Designate VST folder" or something like that--all this is from memory without having the program in front of me--then navigate to whatever folder you're using for the plug-ins. Then you'll have to use the "Refresh VST Folder" command, which should be located right near the "Designate" command is, to be able to use those plug-ins right away.

Let me know if my memory is off and I trip you up somewhere.

The best advice I can give is experiment, experiment, experiment.

Mic placement especially. You never know what might sound great.

Let's make it soon. I very well could be jetting off to the other side of the continent in a couple weeks.

I can do that, I live right next to the campus pub. Its convenient. As far as the recording goes. I think I have it sounding a little bit better now. But now during the pauses in the vocals it sounds like the wave is completely silent and it just doesn't sound right. Ive been trying to toy with it but Im not even sure which plug in did that. Do you know what Im talking about? And why are you going across the continent?

I'm a little unsure of what you're asking with the vocal wave going silent. As far as the plug-in doing it, also confused. I also don't know if it'll really be a problem when you mix it down since just the guitar is going on at that point anyway.

The moving I'll make a thread about soon. I probably have until the end of the month, if I have to guess.
