New Original
New Original
I wrote this song about a week before the performance and I like it a little bit.

Just figured I'd show it to all of you.
Thanks,
Jack

Re: New Original
You have to expect the Dave comparisons on a dave website, but like many people have said before, try to do your own thing. I think you have a good voice and you strum a nice, aggressive rhythm, but all your movements and body language emulate Dave's a lot. I don't doubt that you aren't intentionally doing it, it just comes natural from watching Dave for many years. I guess there isn't really anything wrong with it, but if you want to be taken seriously, you have to try and separate yourself from Dave's stage persona. You have talent and the guts to get up on stage and not hold back, which is more than most can say. Keep it up.

Re: New Original
I agree completely with the above post. I feel bad saying this because you have alot of talent and it takes guts to get up on stage and play, but if you want to be taken seriously as a musician you have to get away from that and find your own sound and "persona". Your young and have alot of time to fix that, I dont really know you very well but I don't think you want to be a Dave Matthews impersonator, so in my opinion it is nothing more than a bad habit. The sooner you can shake that, the sooner your going to start progressing as a musician and all around entertainer,

Re: New Original
you know, i got a lot of shit one time for telling you one of your originals was a dave knockoff.
i'm sorry man, but i'm going to take that shit. it's cool that you're creating music, but what are you doing? you can't seriously look at that video and see yourself performing. you're performing as dave matthews.

Exactly. Thats something you really need to stop doing. Its a joke, man.

Re: New Original
Thanks for the input everybody. My "bad" habbits on stage don't bother me or anyone else. So i don't worry and I do whats natural to me. I've been writing my own stuff and performing it a lot lately and thats really all I care about. I'm glad you guys want me to create better habbits so I can have a future in music. Its nice to know I have people that can look past most things and help me out. In my school i usually get the "wow amazing job Jack" after every song but I know there is always something that needs to be improved. I'm glad its mostly my stage movements. I remember when i started a few years back saying "Thank y'all very much" haah thats Dave Matthews. Or a year ago when step by step dave dance moves were all I did. Its slowly flushing out of my system and more and more of me is showing. But on stage I don't worry about, I just do whats natural and then soon its going to be all me on stage.
I have discovered more music everyday. I've been listening to Pink Floyd and Hip Hop for weeks. (Pink Floyd live in Pompei is a must have DVD) So i hope soon down the road its going to be 100% Jack Babineau with little bits and pieces of my favorites left in me. But for now I'm not gonna force change on myself.
Thanks for the input. I have many more originals that I hope I can get on the internet soon.
Thanks Again,
Jack Babineau

anyone that's ever seen Dave live and heard his voice knows that you are imitating him, even if they don't tell you

Hey man, at least you're a good sport and can take constructive criticism. Cheers for that. But seriously, I watched some of your jewtube videos and most of them are quality, but the DM impersonation really bugs me. Like when you say "looks like were having sound issues" or whatever, that is a clear impersonation of Dave. Cut the act and I promise you will find yourself a lot more respected. It is an act, FWIW.
Peace and good job, the song isn't bad.

You got the words and I got the moves
You got the words and I got the groove
You got the words and know everything
But I’m moving right on to the next best thing
Look at the stars up in the sky
They telling me I got to try
To make it to the very top
And you sit right there telling me to stop
(hahah)
Chorus
I keep it on
Til I know your gone
I keep it on
I bring it home
You got the words and I got the groove
You got the words and know everything
But I’m moving right on to the next best thing
Look at the stars up in the sky

Re: New Original
Maybe try to perform sitting down, and maybe this will help you find your own feel on stage and eliminate Dave's c-walking. It's fine for a talent show, but if you want to be taken serious, which I'm sure is the direction you are heading or else you wouldn't post originals, you can't be Dave on stage. You say it feels natural how you perform, and I'm sure it does, but you are subconsciously acting like Dave from watching him over the years.

Re: New Original
and don't only go by what other people tell you. in fact, i rarely ever do. if people tell me they like a song of mine, i'll thank them, but it won't mean anything unless i'm satisfied with it. that sounds harsh, but since you are the artist, you have to be the ultimate critic of your work. i have songs that i've done that my parents love that i'll never touch again because i know it's not the direction i want to head as an artist.
basically, just because someone says "that sounds great jack" doesn't mean you should take their feedback as your only fuel for creating new work. create your art internally, then share it with those people. not the other way around.

Re: New Original
I agree with alot of what Pat has said. I am without a doubt the ultimate critic of my work and I think thats part of the reason I have such an issue with getting on stage. You dont have that problem and thats a really good thing (about getting on stage, I dont know how critical you are of yourself). The only thing I would really add is about not only going by what other people say. Of course you shouldn't ONLY go by what other people say but I think you should realize the line between constructive criticism from someone with experience and a friend who just says "hey good job". There are some people on here who can really provide some great advice. I have only posted a few covers and one song of my own on here and the little bit of feedback I have gotten from that alone has helped me progress more than anything else. Not only has it helped me see what Im doing right and wrong, but it makes me more confident in my music knowing that with some help I can make the corrections I need to make and continue to improve (on a side note, I appreciate all the help I have gotten here Thanks again). I think if you can at least seriously consider the legitimate advice you get from here or other musicians, just consider it and give it a chance, not neccessarily change something becuase so and so said told you to. I think if you can do that you will learn alot and it would be very beneficial to you and your music. Keep in mind that people aren't here just to bash you, even those who have said some harsh things have also said you have talent and potential. Thats about all Ive got for now. Keep working on it.
Oh yeah. Never refer to yourself in the third person again....You sound like an ass there

Re: New Original
I would love to hear you sing as you. What I mean is not emulating Dave so much. Your stuff is great, your songs are nice, and your playing is solid....but......I gotta agree with everyone about the Dave impersonation. Your voice sounds so much like him and the movements are Dave to a T.
Just for fun, sit, sing, and let loose the real you. For being so young you have such a strong talent.
