Strumming Patterns (help a noobie)
I've been playing the guitar pretty seriously for about 5 months. I'm getting my left hand down well, but im having trouble finding the rhythm and basic strumming patterns for songs like 41 and Crash with the right hand. Are there any concepts i can think about when strumming and playing, or does it come purely from experience? thanks

you arent going to have much luck on the internets reading somebody's post that says "the strumming pattern is: 'UP DOWN DOWN UP DOWN UP'". It really just comes from listening to the music and then listening to what you are playing, be able to notice what strums are emphasized, what an up stroke sounds like, what a down stroke sounds like, making sure you have flow between your up and down strokes.
I honestly can say I never understood this hurdle because it never was a problem for me, but I hope that somewhat helps

Pretty much everything he said^^
A friend of mine could only do jack johnson strums for the longest time before I started showing him some dave jams like in What Would You Say. Strums weren't a problem for me as much a staccato/tremolo picking was. I just cant get my right hand to move fast enough. But just as Easy E said, listen to the song and your playing and analyze the hell out of it. Try to find all the little details and take it slow.
Hope that helps

- Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": As long as there's, you know, sex and drugs, I can do without the rock and roll.
Yeah put on our favorite songs and try to play along with them. This kind of instruction is pretty much impossible over a message board. The only other suggestion is find a buddy who is better at guitar and just watch them. Playing with other people will make you improve quicker than just about anything else.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?
