What would you say is the most important component when recording directly to a PC - the microphone or sound card? Or both? If I had to pick one, which would improve recording quality the most?
I'm looking to spend between $50 and $100 and want to know where best to spend my money to improve the recordings. I've read a lot of posts on the Shure SM57 and SM58 mics. Is one of these the way to go? Would using one significantly improve things over the PC mic I use now or will the results be negligible if I don't upgrade the sound card or add other components?
Also, what are the best settings for recording with Cool Edit Pro? i.e. what's an appropriate Sample Rate considering my equipment (I've been using 96000)? Also, should I go with 32-bit or 16-bit for the Resolution setting?
Recording directly to a PC questions
The answer is both, I've been using a SoundBlaster Live for years (recently upgraded, but I'll be sensitive to your $$ conerns), with a SM58 running in parallel with my line direct from my Chet to a Pandora to the Soundcard. This creates two separate tracks and endless mixing possibilities! If you have any questions feel free to ask...
