Idea of You Cover

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Fri Jun 09, 2006 4:24 am

Well, I finally got the part down on guitar the way I wanted and gave it a shot and I'm preatty happy with it. The guitar is preatty good and gives a good, full sound for a 6 string. The voice is preatty good also IMO, i changed up a few spots because I could not sing high enough (it sounded like shit high and wisperish low and you guys get one me, as well you should, when I sing like that so different it was... Its my cover, i'll do what i want damnit!), but it sounds good. Give it a listen and tell me what you think. I changed the ending a little bit to end it on calm kind of reflective note, i like it a lot this way. Anyway, i hope I got the lyrics right, can't wait to figure out what the hell dave is really saying in some parts, lol. This song better be on the freaking album, I love it to death.

I like it! Did you play it like the tab you posted in the Idea of You thread? Or did you change it up a bit since then?

it's okay, i think the vocals lack any sort of the emotion that makes the song so powerful when dave sings it.

guitar is good. vocals are too whispery.. the chorus is all all about yelling.. if you aren't gonna yell it, then I don't think you should do it.

Someone beat me to it, lol, I was aimin' to have a cover done by the end of the week.

Honestly. . . when comparing it to the original, I didn't like it. I understand adapting vocal styles, and interpretation, and because of that, I enjoyed it, but not comparing it to the original, to me they're two totally different songs. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, it's just a different song the way you do it.

If that makes any sense. My $.02.

I like the guitar and the vocals are ok but the whispery thing doesn't work for me. What was your setup for this?

I agree with Miguel, but you have the timing wrong for the verse.

ya you're right, I should not have even bothered... ???? What kind of statement was that anyway. I'm usually not an ass but that was a stupid thing to say. I did it how I wanted and I did it different on purpose. So thanks for being a smartass and really picking up on the point that in fact I am NOT Dave Matthews. Thanks to everyone that had something constructive to say, I hope more of you do covers on this because I can't do it like Dave, I made it my own. Its going to be interesting to see what kind of tab the rest of you come up with since those Veillette guitars are preatty expensive and rare.

I tried REALLY hard not to do the whispery thing, it's just my voice... Anyway, i recorded on a mac laptop using protools. I used a digidesign Mbox and recorded the guitar with a rode NT-4 stereo mic and the voice through a Neumann TLM-103.

Hey man, don't sweat the whole "I'm not Dave Matthews" thing, none of us are Matthews, and like I (and others) said before, a good song in and of itself, you've just got a tough act to follow. Brand new DMB song, everyone loves it, and you immediately cover it, it's a hard thing to do, and props for givin' it a shot.

Oh I'm not mad about that, it just pissed me off to hear him say "if your not going to do it that way then don't do it at all". For some reason, i was just really happy with how this came out, as differnt as it was, not mad at that, some ppl. should just think twice before making comments like that, maybe im just reading WAY too much into what he said, my bad if thats's the case.
