Synching tracks

In Cool Edit, how do some of you sync your tracks so perfectly? It seems like mine are always just off by a little bit and its so irritating

i assume you're recording seperate tracks and then playing them together and they don't line up...probably because the buffer time between when you hit record and when you start playing is always a little different.

are you using punch-in recording?

after you record your initial track, you can record all subsequent tracks directly on top of the first while using the first as a monitor. you're essentially playing the what you've already recorded AND recording your new track at the same time.

maybe you're already doing this and your problem is completely over my head...so i'll just shut up now

sorry...not puch-in recording. that's when you edit an already-recorded track by picking a spot to "punch-in" and re-record from that point on.

my bad...but are you using the monitor feature to record subsequent tracks?

how do you what you are talking about, because im not doing that? haha if that makes any sense

well, first of all you have to have a sound card that's capable of full-duplex. basically that means it can play a file while recording another at the same time. sometimes there's no way to check besides just trying and seeing what happens.

when you're in multitrack mode, click the red R on the first track and hit record. after you record the first track, deselect the R on the first track and select the R on the second. now, when you hit record, you'll hear the first track you recorded, and you'll be recording on the second track. remember, you'll be monitoring the other track so it's important that you use headphones, or you'll have feedback.

everytime you record a new track, the whole mix will get bigger. but if you want to lay down all subsequent tracks with only the original as a guide, then click the M (for mute) on all tracks you don't wanna hear while you're recording.

when you're all done, uncheck all the Ms, and play it, mix it down from the File menu to create a final mp3.

IMPORTANT!!!! DON'T FORGET TO UNCHECK THE Rs ON THE TRACKS YOU COMPLETE, OR YOU'LL RECORD OVER THEM WHILE TRYING TO DO THE NEXT TRACK.

if you want to edit or add effects to a single track, just double click on it and it'll take you to the other view. make changes and switch back to multiview and the changes will carry over.

right click on the "V 0" box on each track to adjust the levels to make a good mix.

cool thats so much better, i figured there was a way to do that, it was frustrating as hell trying to synch those the other way
