My Own take on some songs.....

Unread post by madtadder » Sat Feb 15, 2003 12:40 am

alright, i've spent the last week in deep hiding....recording like mad trying to make a cd of covers for my girlfriend for valentines day. well that day is over, and all of my hard work is done and done. so i have a bunch of recordings now. I have #41 (with harmonica!), Bartender, and Ghost, by Howie Day. I also managed to write my first song in the chaotic week. It's the first song I've ever written, so it's nothing amazing, but I'm proud of it. Anyways, check 'em out here. leave a message about what you think about them....or not, whatever, just thinking you might want to hear some stuff. i know i love to download covers....

judging by the extreme lack of responses i'm going to assume that i have left everyone speechless and even questioning their own lives, which was precisely my intention!

hey, hey...ok, here are my opinions on the songs...

for #41, the guitar sounded great...the harmonica was an intriguing idea, but i believe it would be a hard song to put harmonica to...it almost drowned out the guitar playing :( ...to be honest, I didn't care much for the hamonica part, but its always fun to test waters with songs that ya have down pat eh? ...you should do a song like THRASHER by Neil Young if you want to play the harmonica for the fun of it...

i REALLY like your own work...very Davish, but a great song! The guitar work is real good and the melody is nice...not one that you could play for 8 min., but good nontheless...i always love to hear originals from fellow musicians :D ...

about Bartender...sound fun...is that your own way of playing it (with the distinct chops)? The only fault I could find is that you wait so dang long before singing the verses (!) ...they almost seem to drag off time with the guitar...i still liked the guitar work and the way you played it...

Ghost sort of drags or lulls by because of the length of it...i have never heard the original, so i am in no position to say anything  ... i like the vocal sound you get...your voice is is good and has potential to only get better...

Overall, only minor faults were noticible...like I said about the vocals, "good, with the potential to get only better"...nice work Tad 8)

yeah, thanks for commenting. about the harmonica on 41, i've only been playing harmonica for maybe 2 months, and that's like maybe an hour of practicing a week, if that. so the harmonica isn't anything amazing. ghost actually does drag on, that's the way it is on the cd. and that's just my take on bartender. and the song i wrote is actually played with my geetar in standard d (DGCFAD). just thought i'd share, i was pretty proud that i actually got away from standard for a little bit, i don't do that much. but anywho, thanks for listening, it means a lot. and i know i have a shitty voice (you can tell because i butchered the screams in bartender), but that's alright, i don't really mind.

I thought the harmonica was real cool. Nice touch, but as firedancer said, it was a little too loud and drowned out the guitar work. I don't know how you recorded it, but if you multitracked the harmonica, you should go back and lower the volume or something, and that would sound awesome. I have never thought of something like that, and it sounded pretty cool. #41 is the only song I've heard so far and it sounds good. Can't wait to hear the rest!!!!

yeah, i'm gonna try and go back and remix the harmonica. the only problem was that when i turned it down a bunch, it was barely audible. i'll see what i can do though...

I think the harmonica was a good thought, but its doesn't work for this particular song. #41 is meant to be a thoughtful simple love song, and the harmonica makes it way to busy to concentrate on the main melody and words.

i see what you mean, but i don't think 41 is a love song, it's about his old business partner.

yeah, it's straight, but yeah i kinda noticed the same thing when i was trying to mix it, the harmonica takes away a lot more than it adds, so i made an mp3 with harmonica only during the jam.

ghost... I MISSED THE DRUM INTRO!!!!!!!!!!! come on ;( how are you gonna do a howie day song like ghost and not do the drum intro... which is what DEFINES the song!? =) .... only had time to listen to ghost (im impartial ... it's a howie day song hehe) very solid work. no complaints here except the lack of DL4... which you can still do if you have a multi track... you simply do second an third tracks!!!!! heh ;)

good job
