well i will be entering this in the contest, but since its my first posted cover, i figured i wouldnt get much feedback while everyone was busy listening to everyones covers
before you listen, i have one of those 'pre-excuses' that jason hates so much. i CANNOT play and sing at the same time. it is the hardest thing in the world for me to do but i try anyway. so as soon as i figure out how to record 2 different tracks and merge them, you will hear a much better cover of tripping billies from me. i promise
any feedback would be great
oh and i know i rushed the 'cause were tripping billies' part and it sounded really bad so i left er out of the second verse, so no need to point that out
please respond and let me know what you think

Well here it goes....
Good job...guitar part was good overall...there were a couple of rough spots in the begining...sounded like a timing mistake (I made some too though)....your voice is fine except you gotta sing out man....you held back too much and it sounded too muddled and hard to hear....
My only recomendation would be jsut to sing louder...
Great guitar work though...sounded good....I may have to go hide if the rest of the submissions are this good....
Peace,

i dont know why, but i always make that mistake, but only the first time out of the 6 times that part occurs in the song

The guitar work was pretty darn good, and the guitar sounded great (what guitar were you using??) anyway, like you admitted, the vocals need a lot of work, but I'm not a great singer and my voice needs work as well. The ability to sing and play these Dave tunes at the same time takes simply practice, just like learning the guitar parts. Anyway, its gonna be a good competition. I'm putting my cover up right after I submit this post.
peace
good, and you?

Yeah good guitar, like everyone else has said....anyway, the key to singing while playing is to learn the guitar part down cold, to where you can play it without thinking, like second nature. then when you sing it's like yer not even playing guitar, you almost forget

hey mr.revelator
guitarwork overall was quite good. i understand completely the difficulty of singing and playing at the same time, as I used to have a really hard time with it. however, as you get more confident and practise more it becomes easier. people have noted the little timing mistake. i don't need to go into that and it's completely understandable
as to your voice, can you not sing the song an octave up?? you were going sharp during the chorus, and it really soundid like you wanted to kick it into a higher gear. go for it! i think it would really help the song, unless you really just can't do it. one thing i would say is don't be afraid to use the capo if you want to sing it higher, but not a whole octave up. as with a lot of people here, i think you would also benefit from going more from the gut. as most guys here listen to a lot of dave, whether they intend to or not, they begin to sound a little like dave. the problem is, if you don't pull that off REALLY REALLY REALLY well, it's not going to sound that hot, cause dave just doesn't have the greatest technique. i'd say try to listen to how some other guys sing. if you like their stuff, Queen is a great example of rock n roll vocals that are technically sound. personally, i don't dig much queen. i guess i'd say go from the gut, get the air flowing, and let it go out of control a little. the only way people ever improve as vocalists is if they discover where their weaknesses are, and they are weak where they begin to lose contol of their voice. just practise practise practise man and you'll surprise yourself.

thanks tico
i try to go all out when no one can hear me but i can only sing confidently in a few keys
i dont know if thats improvable or what, but im willing to learn
as for singing from the gut, i try, but i dont really know how
are there any techniques or guidelines to using your stomach to help you sing better?

When you breathe in, try and breathe from your gut. Actually put your hands on your lower belly and sides, if you breathe properly, this should be pushed out due to the lowering of the diaphragm upon breathing in. Then try and sing from that place, try to use your stomach and lower abdomen to provide the force. Your lower abdominal muscles should be pushing out somewhat if you do this correctly

ticohan knows what he is talking about... i had to improve this, too. the only way for me to do it was to wait until i was alone in the house and sing loud. you might think that singing too loud would be bad, but it comes out much better
