Live "Sweet Baby James"

Unread post by GreedylilPig » Mon Apr 19, 2004 9:56 pm

So I finally figured out (with the help of several of my friends around town as well as on this site) how to record a live performance or two. This is from Friday night (4/16/04) and it's a James Taylor tune. I hope you enjoy and any comments/suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Setup: I used the out-jacks on my amplifiers and plugged them into a Yamaha MT50 4-track. The amplifiers used were a Fender Acoustasonic SFXII for my guitar [Martin D-28] and a Fender Princeton Chorus for my mic [EV N/D267]. I also set up another mic about 5 feet away from me facing upward, rather low and at an equal distance away from the amps. It was the 3rd track.

I think what you were looking for was a critique of the recording quality. In my opinion the quality was excellent, very good for a live recording. I've already heard your studio version of this song and the technical singing/playing was about equal to this version. I could never play this technically well live, I get the butterflies and go ultra fast. I'd like to hear a recording of a whole set of your material. All around very good, probably my favorite cover of yours, very true to the original.
I'll play it first and tell you what it is later.

Brian man you are awesome! I am gonna have to get up there to see you some time.

The recording quality sounded pretty good. I just hear a bit of a hiss or some sort of noise. But the guitar and your voice sound good man.

Recording is fair.. with your sound coming off the stacks, I would have thought it would sound more present than that, did you add reverb post? or is the 3rd mic signifigantly added?

As for the playing, you having an interesting voive, I thought you sung it as well as I need to not be able to critique it.. your guitar playing came off fine as well.. the whole package though, I couldn't keep tempo with it.. I realize it is slightly freeform or maybe it was because of how distant it (muddy) but the guitar is the source of tempo, and I couldn't tap my foot..

The noise sound like feedback.. you should post-process with a notch filter for that frequency

Thank you for the comments, everyone. Regarding quality, I suppose I had the 3rd mic input turned up too loud, causing the slight hiss. I'll know better next time. Thanks again.
