really nice job man. i liked it better as it went on. some to the marimba parts were really neat. the guitar was good too. also, what kind of equipment did you use to record the guitar? im looking into a quality similar to that, which was really nice. Again, great job.

we recorded that in the concert hall of Fresno State University in california, and I recorded it straight into my Boss BR-532 digital 4 track. The marimba player and I just both stood in front of my mic, a sure pg 81 condenser mic and played the song in one take. I would recomend this 4 track to anyone, it is portable, has tons of built in effects, a tuner, up to 32 recordable tracks, XLR input for you mic, guitar input, line input, and it all stores on smart media disks. Then they go right on to the computer. Great little unit. I like it's portability.

great stuff, greg, absolutely great stuff. the one thing i will say negative about it is the piano should have done WAY WAY WAY more!!!! i think it could have really filled out the sound VERY nicely with just playing solid or broken chords as the situation demanded, with just a little filler here and there. the marimba is already very ornate and involved, so you don't want too many other frills, but it seems to me that this recording is begging for a piano to fill it out. it just seems that the timbre of it would be perfect. wow, the jam out on the Em to D at the end is SWEET. awwww, love the lick at 4:29. maybe i am going on too much with this piano stuff because i am a pianist, but this is EXACTLY the type of thing that i do with the piano, slightly jazzy improv, and i have all sorts of things running through my head as i listen to it. get yourself a sensitive pianist with good improv skills and a jazzy ear, and what is already a wonderful recording i think could really be phenomenal.

by the way, have you ever heard of jennifer stasack?? she's written a couple of really influential and important pieces for the marimba. she's my composition teacher here at davidson.

ok, now that i listen to it more, i can hear more of the piano in the background. i think it needs to be less bassy, and bring it up in the mix!!

I just listened to your black veil cover, and it was also wonderful! I think that the sound of the marimba and the guitar part for this song really change it up, and it's hard to place the text with this arrangement, but that doesn't make it a bad one for me. i do have a suggestion for it, too. THIS IS JUST BEGGING FOR A REGGAE STYLE GUITAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In so many places I wanted you to break into that sweet reggae synchopation and then hear Marley croon over this song. Give it the Carribean treatment!!!! It could really work, especially in the places where you have just straight hard strumming, I think, as opposed to the lick part.

Yeah, I think I agree with ya on just about all the points you made. The marimaba player is a pianist by trade, and when we got to school he decided to be a percussionist.....? don't ask me why. I guess he likes to beat things.... but we've been playing 41 for the longest time, and LBV was kind of a spur of the moment thing. The piano in 41 was kind of an afterthought, as the guitar and marimba were both recorded on the same take, the piano we added in afterwards, and he does a few little fills, but it could be brought out in the mix alot more. I can't say that I've ever heard of your teacher Jennifer, but I'm sure that he (my friend allan, the marimba player) so i'll have to ask him. Thanks for the comments!
