wow...just merely speaking of the effects...
the effect of doing "volume swells" with a volume pedal can create a real nice velvety sound becuase you are removing the attack on the string...fingerpicking can add to the equation too...no wah for my song...some reverb helps...and some delay...but mostly...Volume Pedal swells

I liked your cover thanks for posting. One question, on the last part are you playing the riff like this, it sounds a little different. It sounds to me like Tim's part when Dave and Tim play it together. Then again I may be wrong.

Yes, it is a volume pedal think.. you back the pedal off on the attack of notes, to make the strum or pluck inaudible, and then rise up quickly with the volume pedal. The effect you create is similar to the way a bowed instrument or a wind player attacks a note, instead of the harsh way a guitar player usually does. Here is something I made using such a technique:
