I about jumped on ya again for that pop comment, but you clarified yourself. Ben is about as far from pop as you can get, at least his first 4 albums.Appsoldier wrote:sorry...he's freaking awesome. he's the best "pop" slide guitarist ive ever heard.
i say pop meaning to count out like bluegrass bands. i know he isn't pop pop but he's more pop than bluegrass.

I actually was a little disappointed with Live from Mars. I have about 10 bootlegs of his, and I thought Mars was subpar by his standard. He's an astounding live musician. I don't know what it is, but he can just grab the audience by the nuts. I can't wait for the new live DVD.mbgreen wrote:Thanks for the comments guys...this song IS really easy to play, but I think the simplicity combined with the lyrics makes it really beautiful. Check out Ben's version...cause his vocals are what really make the song.
And I cant F'n believe you people havent heard Ben Harper before. Dont think all of his songs are like this...the guy can play some mean funk, some good hard electric stuff, and he plays a pretty mean slide. I know I said this, but just to reiterate: I'd highly recommend getting his live album, "Live From Mars." It'll give you a good sampling of what he's all about.
Just my .02.

I agree...but if youre going to go to the store to buy something, I'd get that over just getting one album. The dvd is going to be SICK. I saw him most recently this summer in San Diego. He played a nice set...I actually liked the new stuff a lot more live. (Still liked it on the cd, but its even better live.) Did you get a chance to catch any shows this past summer?QuattroDore wrote:I actually was a little disappointed with Live from Mars. Yup. Kansas City. I'm am still amazed at how QUIET 10,000 people can get during the acoustic set. He played Walk Away and Another Lonely Day and you could hear the sprinklers turn on in the lawn outside the amphitheater!mbgreen wrote:I agree...but if youre going to go to the store to buy something, I'd get that over just getting one album. Ben Harper in Ryman Auditorium is the far and away the greatest concert I've ever been to, and that list include Dave and Tim at Ryman from the second row. Thinking about Sexual Healing that night still gives me goosebumps.

No shit...its soooo nice when you get a respectful crowd during the quiet stuff. The crowd in San Diego was without a doubt the best crowd I've been a part of. Ben even thanked us after he played walk away...he said "Other than one show in Paris France, that was the most quiet I've ever had a crowd of this size be. Thank you so much...I really do appreciate it." Anyway, I guess I'll stop stroking Ben's dick now. But he really is damn good.QuattroDore wrote:Yup. Kansas City. Word.mbgreen wrote:You havent heard of Ben Harper?! What?! He's pretty damn cool. Check out his live album, called "Live From Mars." Its a two disc set. The first disc has all of his electric, full band stuff. The second disc is way more mellow...sort of a solo acoustic thing. Its got a lot of great songs on it.borocks wrote:First of all, good job on that one, sounds really mellow...
I don't know the original by Ben Harper, so I've no possibility to compare you to him.
I think the guitar playing is very solid, sounds permanently right.
The vocals could have a bit more power, I know it's a mellow song but it wouldn't be bad at all to put some more power in it.
You said you messed up the high notes, but I don't think so. I rather think you hit them pretty well, the problem might be that you didn't hit the following deep note perfectly after doing the high one.
But execpt of that you did very well on this song!
I haven't known Ben Haper well, you've just got me to check out some stuff.
Peace, Bo
Anyway, thanks for the input. I appreciate it. NOW GO DOWNLOAD SOME BEN HARPER!
