Hof listened to your song last night. Hof thinks you alright. Hof also thinks that what everyone said in this thread is right. Hof don't get persuaded by what 16 yr old dudes gotta say about his performances. Yeah Hof know he good in the sack and nothing no 16 yr old dude say is gonna change that.

Very interesting comments. I can understand some of the opinions here but I have seen this kid play first hand as I live in his area. I've seen him play different venues and I can honestly say I never came away feeling as if he was a DMB copy. As a matter of fact, I saw him perform "Tears in Heaven" last night at my daughter's school concert and you could hear a pin drop. What a voice. I think some songs just bring out certain tendencies. It's not as if he is "30 something wannabee-has been", he's only 17. SRV heres my opinion. Don't post any more of your work if it has even the slightest hint of DMB because you are going to get slammed. Oh, and it takes alot of guts to write your own stuff and perform live. Keep it on!

Not a friend, a parent of a student who goes to his school who also just happens to know this young man. (He has never mentioned this board to me) Also a musician that frequents this site and has never previously commented EXACTLY because of the inevitable above comment.

Noone really slammed him. We gave honest opinions of what he posted. You will get a few sarcastic comments here and there but you can get alot of good contructive critism in this forum. You can't be a musician and expect everyone to praise everything you do, especially when you post in order to use critique as a learning tool. You gotta be willing to take the bad with the good. Most of the slams on here come as a result of people not taking criticism well anyways. As far as recruiting a friend thing goes I really dont give a shit so Ill keep my Jellyfish related opinion to myself...sorta.

there's something about this guy and crticism that quite fit. i swear, he either doesn't take it at all or he has friends back him up.

and smitty, if you have seen him play and have honestly felt that he was not channeling dave, (even in his original works!) then i question how much you have seen dave matthews perform. it's nice that's you're supporting this kid - nobody here isn't. you say "oh, he's 17, he's great, give him a break." why should we? he posted an original song on here for critique. i'm going to critique it artist to artist. i'm only 19, and i'd expect absolutely nobody to give me a break based on my age. smitty, this may sound like a pompous thing to say, but as an outsider to this entire process of critiquing music, i simply don't think you understand what our points are, what our intentions are, and how absolutely normal these comments are.

If he didn't want honest critique he wouldn't have posted his work here. We aren't ganging up on him, he asked an opinion and almost everyone on here agrees. But you are probably right he isn't imitating Dave Matthews....

If you look at his youtube videos and see the scats its pretty obvious, even more so than other things he has posted. But even with that said, its still not with the intent to bash the kid. I would like to see him be able to step out of that and do his own thing. A perfect example in my opinion of someone who shows an obvious influence of Dave but has successfully found is own unique sound is Jason Mraz. He opened up for Dave and does the same kind of scats from time to time, but as a whole his music is very different. Im pullin for Jack though, I respect the fact that hes making music, however if the IP comes out.... then I give up

If I saw you playing live I would laugh hysterically. Cut the imitations, be your own musician

You got the words and I got the moves
You got the words and I got the groove
You got the words and know everything
But I’m moving right on to the next best thing

Look at the stars up in the sky
They telling me I got to try
To make it to the very top
And you sit right there telling me to stop

(hahah)
Chorus
I keep it on
Til I know your gone
I keep it on
I bring it home

I don't get it. well, I do. some people just don't like criticism. they get a few people to fluff their ego, tell them that their stuff is good and they think "yeah it has to be if these guys said so". We're a little broader audience here. I know you got an attitude and an ego and we're not trying to get you to get rid of that. What we want you to do is stop singing like Dave. I've heard your Midnight Rider so I know you can sing.

I think your arguement is with Smitty not me. I haven't denied one thing you have said. I made one post on here about how I agree i may be too much like Dave Matthews sometimes but I'm not forcing the change. I don't have a big ego and I have a lot respect for anyone willing to go on stage and perform. I'm just glad I was blessed with the ability and I really hope I can continue. I've had a lot of fun playing and I have met A LOT of nice people while doing it. I don't have a problem with anything you said. I'm having a good time, and I'm improving IMO. I'm probably not as good as most of you in the music category and I have listened to almost every post in this forum and I have a big respect for all who posted music.
