Have you ever heard of Todd Sickafoose? He's a really great upright bassist I saw play with Ani DiFranco and I was amazed at how high up the neck he could play, at times it looked like he was off the fretboard.

you may only have four strings, but you also have ZERO frets, which takes LOADS more talent to master than any instrument in which intonation is not controlled by the playerMahlerGrooves wrote:I cannot play guitar worth crap, and I really do respect you guys for being so good.
Plus, you all play an instrument with 6 strings, and I only have to deal with 4. 8)

I love how we are fighting to see who is better, but are taking the less than normal side of "NOT ME!"
I respect all musicians. Sure, I play a fretless instrument, but I still respect y'all!

why are they so expensive? 35,000 dollars...you could buy a car with that...1.5 million dollars could buy you a house....i mean...i dont mean to dash the beauty/craftsmanship...but i think 35,000 is a bit much unless its encripted with expensive jewels...whats the deal with this expensiveness....
also, at what point do you make this jump to such an expensive instrument? it seems like you basically have to start out on a multi-thousand dollar investment...whereas guitar you can start for like 200 bucks...comment?

mahler is my new favorite poster.
i played with a classical bassist yesterday in my garage, he plays classical and electric-- tho he prefers classical.
he uses his bow pretty sparingly--he's a jazz guy.
all i have to say is-- regular guitar is easier than all of this, and since i have beenlearning music theory, and want to branch out-- i am considering cello lessons in a few months.
also-- his doublebass is great, he did some solos on it-- blew me away!
Im not sure what make it was--
but his electric bass was a warwick-- and we jammed out some DMB tunes with him on that. (He's a big DMB fan)
I -- need to start researching good places for cello lessons..

Usually, a bassist rents for the first few years and schools usually have instruments to use. Once the decision is made to do it professionally and to apply to music schools, that is when the large purchase comes in, and it is usually covered under educational loans.i am sam2 wrote:why are they so expensive? 35,000 dollars...you could buy a car with that...1.5 million dollars could buy you a house....i mean...i dont mean to dash the beauty/craftsmanship...but i think 35,000 is a bit much unless its encripted with expensive jewels...whats the deal with this expensiveness....

As for the price, my bass was made over 100 years ago, and the older instruments are more valuable. As with a guitar, a bass opens and changes with age and the sound develops for HUNDREDS of years due to all the wood.
Also, mine has only been repaired with tonewoods, and it has never had a soundpost crack (which makes it special).

I respect all musicians. Sure, I play a fretless instrument, but I still respect y'all!i'm simply stating a fact, its MUCH harder to become proficient at an instrument like cello or double bass than it is guitar.

and i know you aren't gonna come out and say that you are better than us, no respectable person would do that. but im just trying to state that i've always seen the guitar as inferior instrument skill-wise, i just have the utmost respect for players of classical instruments
