The whole track in general but the percussive hits would certainly benefit the most.JacknCoke wrote:mwr - thanks for the words...when you say "it sounds like a cardboard box" are you referring to the beginning beat? or the whole track in general?
ghost and beams of light on the DL4
well, i agree on the percussion...not much i can do on a small scale about that...on another board im on there are people with the same problem, the percussion sounds real dull...on a large scale, a way better soundcard in my comp might be the answer...but im not messing around with that junk, too many problems with my last computer when i tried getting cute with it....

I know what you mean. You can always add a bit of reverb after the fact. That way you don't have to worry about latency or CPU load.JacknCoke wrote:well, i agree on the percussion...not much i can do on a small scale about that...on another board im on there are people with the same problem, the percussion sounds real dull...on a large scale, a way better soundcard in my comp might be the answer...but im not messing around with that junk, too many problems with my last computer when i tried getting cute with it....
Honestly a bit of reverb and compression will make your tracks sound 100x better. Of course you run the risk of getting techno fever but it's worth a bit of frustration.
first off, i'm a huge Howie Day fan, have like 20+ shows of his from archive.org and all his CDs, DVDs, etc... your cover was great man, definately impressed. All you gotta do now is actively overdub without listening to your loops first like in the beginning. The tab you used is also the real old version, he plays it a little differently now. Also, you need to throw in a lot more muted string hits.
I have a few really good videos of him doing that song.. watching what he does might help a lot with timing and all the "extras" he throws in there (pick slides, mute string hits, extra thumps on the guitar)
I also got a DL4 for christmas so i've been trying to get all his songs down as well.. ok man good work, holla if you want those vids..

Howie uses a DD3 for his guitar digital delay effects. He uses 2 DD5s for his vocals though.. and you can use a DD5 in place of a DD3Buck23 wrote:reason I ask about the DD5 is because Howie uses one on his guitar, so when you hear 8 drum beats he's only hitting the guitar 4 times, and the other 4 beats are the DD5's echoes of his beats...didnt know if you just did all 8 yourself, or if the DL4 can do that and loop at the same time.
I have a DL4, and you can achieve the echo, but its nowhere as distinct or howie-sounding as using a real DD3 and DL4 together

thanks for the replies guys...jared, great to see another avid howie fan...i have a nice size vid collection as well..i do know im missing a lot of the muted string effects..iv been listening over and over again to a couple of live versions, picking up things here and there..my attempt at this song was by no means dead on....im stillin getting used to the looping and all...what video's do you have by the way?

Howie Day - A Perfect Time of Day.mpg
i got them all (but my rip) from Emule... IM me sometime if you want any/all of them. Oh, and i have a good tip for learning the DL4 timing... learn to loop fast loops, like DMB - satellite.. once you can get that loop dead on over and over again you'll be set. Its also fun to play crash, then do the easy tim fills over it.. kinda cool sounding

i dont think there is a tab for that specific run of ghost..to be perfectly honest with ya, he plays it different almost everytime...which makes it difficult b/c everybody has a favorite version of it....i know the version i have isnt tabbed, exactly the same way he did it at that venue.....guess you just have to improvise as best as you can...:/

nice work...good job spreading the howie love...just curious about something I've noticed w/my DL4 - there seems to be some serious digitizing (ill call it that for lack of a better term) of the signal in the loops - I get this with my DL4 and i noticed it on this track, i was curious what is the cause of this - pickup/cables/faulty DL4 - just curious if anyone had any insight?
wow cool cover.
I also love this song, and have recently picked up a bunch of live shows off of archive.org
I love the way he plays ghost, but I really want to see a video of him doing it. How's he do all that live? It's insane. Anyone got a dvd of him playing they can bp for me? email me

thanks for the comment devil..i really never noticed a distinct sound, but im guessing it would be caused by the dl4...im not sure if its an actual bug in the pedal, or just the way the digital delay sound is supposed to come off..my guess is that its just gonna sound like that..then again, im no electrical techie...
pyoo, pick up the madrigals cd..comes with a dvd of him playing live..the camera work is phenominal, showing how he does this and that on ghost, sorry, bunnies and madrigals...oh, and thanks for the comment too
