help with singing

ive got lyrics and music, but i cant sing the lyrics. since they're my own, i dont know how to put them to the music exactly. also, my voice doesnt' seem to match the music. its either too high or too low at times. are there any exercises that would help me hit the right notes. any help would be appreciated.

what i do is figure out what key im in. then sing the scale along with my guitar to get a feel for what notes work in that chord progression / song etc... then i start slowly to hum to the guitar part that i wrote until the wrods come on their own.
