First Post! DMB Medley (16 songs, 13 minutes)

Unread post by mje4041 » Thu Feb 15, 2007 4:06 pm

After finally setting up a small recording setup in my apartment, I have my first post. It's a guitar-only medley of the following DMB songs. The clips are relatively short since there is only one guitar and no vocals. I will admit that this unoriginal idea was inspired by the Bez Pezzner postings, although this is nowhere near the length or improv quality of the BP recordings.

I hope to put some originals and full covers up in the near future. I tried to set up a MySpace page, but it wouldn't take the 12mb file. Here is the link:

I would really appreciate any comments, critique, etc. A few notes:

-There is a loud pop at the very beginning. Not sure how that happened.
-These are pretty accurately played, with a few intentional variations.
-I came up with these songs on the train home, just thinking which parts of certain songs would go well into another song. Certain songs couldn't be added because of tuning issues - DDTW, Crush, etc.
-Enjoy!

Recording was done with a Fall 2003 Taylor Limited 414ce direct to an Alesis FireWire8 into GarageBand on a MacBook Pro. The guitar is very thin at times, but I couldn't get a crisp high-end sound with my Shure 57 or 58. I'm saving for a Shure 81. Thanks for listening!

First of all, welcome.

Second, I'm listening through it right now. Sounds like fairly solid playing. The medley idea wasn't going so hot until the Watchtower>BOWA, because the tempo changes didn't work out too well.

I'd like to hear it with vocals, if you do that, so far it sounds good.

Pretty good playing. Not really something I'd pay to see  , but the playing was solid, not many mistakes.

very good....

Any chance you would tab out the fills that you are playing during "Ants"? It sounds very funky.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies so far. I played this on one take, but I should've started over until I got through without a mistake.

I will listen again to the beginning to work on the flow, tempo changes that you mentioned. That's a good point, as I was only thinking of songs where they key changes would sound right, but didn't consider the potentially poor sounding tempo changes.

The Ants section is a combo of stuff I think Dave has done and just imporvising around the D and G chords in different positions. I'm going to put some more thought into the song selection and try to make a better flowing medley this weekend. When it's done I will gladly tab out anything that interests you (which, by the way, I appreciate!).

Thanks again,
Mike
