should i get singing lessons?

Unread post by davekllawre210 » Tue Jan 30, 2007 5:24 pm

I have been playing guitar for a while, I can play most dave songs...I consider myself above avg, but not expert by any means. the thing is this, my friends will sometimes ask me to play guitar or something cause they know i'm good..(a lot of times when girls come over).....thing is i can't sing for shit. i would love to be able to play a song as well as sing with it. it's not like i can't sing and play at the same time...the singing (voice) just sounds like crap. can i learn how to sing well by myself or should i get lessons?

It came pretty naturally to me, as far as rounding my tone and hefty projection (although until I learned to do it properly it may not have been the healthiest manner for my throat).

Singing lessons have improved me very, very much, but it also depends on the quality and reliability of the teacher in question (i.e., education and references should be looked at before you write a check).

I consider myself a very good singer, although it may not come out on my recordings which are posted here; it's a toughy when you're hunched over, singing into a little iSight microphone and trying not to belt it too loud because you're roommates will trip shit (I share a one-bedroom in midtown Manhattan). Some of my stuff is recorded at what is essentially a stage whisper, and sometimes I adjust or weaken it, squeak it a bit, whatever, because there is a vibe I want. You can learn to do that without straining chords or something with good, solid, proper vocal lessons, so I recommend them if you're serious about it.

90% of what your high school choir told you is bullshit, by the way.

Of course you can learn by yourself. But lessons will be faster. They'll direct you to your goal faster. learning by yourself you will have to slowly figure out how to practice and what works as far as progressing.
If you can afford it take the lessons if not start with two chords and sing till you hit the notes. Then add resolves, much like a guitar riffs, to add color. Try starting out with chords like G to C or G to am. after you can hit notes comfortably learn the simplest dave songs like typical situation and work from there. It's a long hard process but you learned to play guitar. right?

I've been wanting to take solid guitar lessons for a couple of years now. Not saying Im the virtuoso, but its hard finding a guitar teacher that is genre or style specific that can take someone who has been playing for 12 years to that next level.

Cliff notes: I am a strong advocate for lessons of any kind. If you have the means and can find a good instructor, DO IT

so i'm thinking i might take lesson.....is there a certain kind of singing lessons i should look for? i mean....i obviously don't want to learn opera singing or anything like that. any suggestions?\

also........how many lessons, on avg. would i need? i know its different for everyone...but i want to financially see if its worth it. say lessons are $15 a sesson. i wanna be able to figure out about how many total lessons i will take so i have a clue how much the total investment will be.

thanks

p.s. i can't post my shitty singing with a song, if that would help in anyway....just let me know..

Once again, it depends on your teacher. Nobody can say you will be able to sing this song in 4 lessons. Just go for one and if you see yourself improving over time, stay. Let your teacher know you are doing Rock or Pop singing before you even sign up for lessons. Some voice teachers only do formal training.

Vocal Production are the two words you should be looking for.
