Lyrics (a little different depending on the version)--
Five years ago
I told my story
but the sheriff
wouldn't budge
he said, "I know what you've done.
you did what they say.
Now here you will rot (in this jail cell)
the rest of your days
I'd like to show you
show you what I see
I've got these chains
they've been hanging on me
the rain is pouring
and the roof it leaks
I've got this water
dripping on me
and these walls they're caving in
I haven't seen the sunshine
in three f$%&*%$ weeks
Chorus
Sometimes I find it hard to get by
these days, they've been weighing on my mind
I need you baby I need you to survive
Two men rolled over
they sang a song
but they got the words
all wrong
the said it was me
John Esteban
but i didn't do it
I did no wrong
Now here I am
playing out the days
counting the holes
in this concrete slab
Chorus
Last night
you came to me in a dream
you kissed me on my cheek
and said you set me free
remember that night?
six years ago
I came to you
and said I'd save your soul
Now set me free
Set Me Free (The Story of John Esteban)
interesting songwriting (didn't listen to the tune)... however, in the future you may want to refrain from the cliches that you utilized often (weigh on my mind, etc.) they make the song a little less personal.
as a singer-songwriter, you want to obviously come of as real as possible to your listeners.
