first post- with some covers

Unread post by vinestreet98 » Wed Sep 27, 2006 5:22 pm

whatup people!

i am new here... i play guitar and sing although i'm novice at both. i love this forum after browsing through some posts because you guys are all so cool to each other... plus this board actually gets traffic, which rocks.

anyway, i've been playing for 2 years and singing for 6 mos. before that, i couldn't hold/hit a note, and would always hurt my throat. now, i can actually do it, but of course practice makes perfect. so, these are some sloppy covers i did... please let me know what you think.

1 is a little bit of 'she says' and the other is madrigals.
i wouldn't say that this is my best effort. i did both while not warmed up at all... and not really intending on showing anybody. but i put them online, so let me know! thanks!

max

p.s... i'm ALSO new to dave matthews and am trying to learn 'seek up'... what a hard song that is... :)

Welcome to the boards!

This is typically a cool forum, and my best advice is to sort out good advice from people just being dicks, but most here are very good about constructive criticism. Anyways, here's my attempt at some good advice.

She Says:

The guitar sounds pretty good especially since it sounds like this was recorded in one take. It is very fluid considering you are singing at the same time.

I like the tonal qualities of your voice and you show a lot of potential, but there are some pitch issues that need to be resolved. Also, you are holding some notes out too long, especially in the 1st verse. I can hear you running out of breath which is no good, but the good news is you can fix that with some breathing excercises.

Here is a thread i made with some good resources that will help you.

Madrigals:

Guitar is also good, i would suggest tuning everything flat and seeing how it sounds with your voice. I find it easier to sing a lot of songs when my guitar is tuned down a 1/2 step.

The vocals are better on this one, maybe you are warmed up or the song just fits better. There is still work to be done but none the less its good.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

thanks for the feedback man!
i actually do tune my guitar down 1/2 step... so that's what you're hearing. do you think i should go so far as to tune down a whole step?

Hey, I thought you sounded pretty good man, I can't give you any advice cuz I can't sing worth a LICK. But I liked the transition into a lil U2 "One" there during the middle of "She Says".

I left you a PM asking you about your singing progress, so make sure you check that.

I'm pretty impressed since you considered yourself a novice. Good work.
