Iron and Wine appreciation thread (recording wise)

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Sat Apr 29, 2006 4:06 pm

I have just started getting into Iron and Wine per request from one of my firends and I have to say they have had a big impact on me over the past few days. For those of you that record stuff on here and don't have very good equipment and don't know who Iron and Wine is, I suggest you check them out. They are mostly acoustic and their stuff is very simplistic but beautiful. Alot of thier recordings were done in their home with equipment that was not very good and I have to say, it sounds excelent in it's own way. The quality is not very good, but its all in their mixing and mastering that the magic comes from. If you want an example of a song to see what I'm talking about, check out "Such great heights", it's a cover they did on a postal service song and it portrays perfectly what I'm talking about (That song is alos on the garden state soundtrack if you have that...). So I just wanted to let alot of you in on them so you could get an idea of what you are capable of even though you don't have nice equipment. Alot of you have given me big props on the recording quality of alot of my stuff and have loathed about alot of the stuff I get to work with, but this band has really turned me around. My friend Lucas wante dme to record one of his songs to sound like Iron and Wine so it's been interesting for me this week going back to a crappy little sound bord and 2 cheap computer mics and recording his stuff in a live manner strait onto a little tape recorder and then mastering that recording to get the desired effect. We are currently working on something of his and I have created the Iron and Wine sound preatty accuratly with 2 $20 mics, a $50 sound bord and a tape recorder. It sounds more beautiful then anything I could do with the $100,000 worth of equipment in the studio and that is amazing to me. So those of you that don't have the best stuff to work with, don't fret! Check these guys out and see what I mean. I guess what I'm trying to say is that these days, we put way to much emphasis on the quality of alot of music and forget about the music itself. Don't let technology get in the way of your music, these guys didn't and it adds a whole new dynami to their stuff that is perfect and beautiful.

I'm a big fan. I was actually about to record a song a little while ago and post it here.

I recorded Naked As We Came a while back, perhaps I'll post it later. I love to just sit back and play I&W songs, very relaxing, truly great stuff. http://www.passingafternoon.com has a pretty solid archive of tabs, including a lot of songs from his home demo sessions.

Isn't Iron and Wine just one guy? And could you post a link refering to his equipment I'd be realy interested.
Evey Hammond: Who--who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what... and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking on the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

Yeah, it's Sam Beam. Although he frequently records with guests, and his sister.

I also recommend Sam's cover of the flaming lips 'waitin for a superman' as well as the live cover of I&W + Calexico doing the stones 'wild horses'

I hate their cover of Such Great Heights so I never gave them a chance. I love Postal Service and they just destroyed the song. It is one slovenly, sluggish, dreadful song.

I like that such great heights cover too, anyone attempt to play/tab it?

same goes for that mr.soul cover, he plays a real weird picking pattern.

Such great heights is preatty easy, i figured it out on my own. Capo 6th fret and its just C, G, F, C, G. Listen to it a few times and you will start to pick up the picking pattern. It's not a continuous pattern, you kind of pause here and there, so take it slow at first. The only weird thing is that you don't play a full F bar chord, its just 130000 instead of 133200. Also, if you are looking for songs, look at Sodom, South Georgia. Oh my god, great song, I can't stop listening to it. Another good one is Evening On The Ground.

i posted some rough recordings of 8 i&w songs, they're not perfect but they might be of help for someone learning these songs (cinder and smoke, each coming night, faded from winter, jezebel, lion's mane, naked as we came, such great heights, and the trapeze swinger [as played live])

volume may be a bit low, i didnt bother messing around with all my recording settings
