I'm glad there were at least 5 entries here anyway. It would've been very interesting if everyone pulled through on it though... I took my time listening to each of these and most of my comments below were written as I listened. Sorry for being so long-winded. As for my votes, well I struggled on a few things. Fire - it would've been nice if you came through with a new one. Not like there was much room for improvement, but I'm sure if you redid the vocals, you could've made it basically perfect. Secondly, not sure that it was fair to include a collab among single performers, but there was no "rule" against it... Finally, I'm not pretentious enough to vore for my own entry, but anyways, here are my votes/comments:
1 - Fire - well, most of us have heard this before, but nevertheless, it's just fucking awesome (and note, I rarely drop the F-bomb). A few misses on the vocals so if there was anything you should've redone for this contest it was maybe the vocals. The fact that you're not much more than half my age speaks volumes on your talent though. But you already knew that, right?
2 - bedurndurn - cool little bass mimic in the intro and very listenable outro, even as one guitar. Vocals are on key and confident sounding (you sound relaxed and like you're having fun). Sounds like your voice needs some time to develop to reach its full potential however. You're playing the song a bit quick though and there are some tempo problems here and there. Obviously, a one track (singing while playing) entry though so for that you get some major props. A better quality recording would do wonders for demostrating your talent. Nice job (especially for 1 MB)!
3 - geekmug - the guitar work and mix was awesome. The vocals, well, need a lot of work. The sound of your voice is not bad, but you were off key more than you were on. Perhaps it's a limited range, but there were parts where I think you could've hit the right notes and you didn't. Hey, screw it, you weren't ashamed to try, right? The guitar work, again was VERY impressive; so much so that I can overlook the misses on the vocals. I'd love to sing over that for you sometime...
Apps/FJ - Nice job on the collab guys although it gets a little jumbled at 2:30 - 2:50. Nice vocals Apps. Very smoothing. You over-pronounced some words, but nice job overall and very solid. I think with some better recording equipment your vocals could really shine! The backup vocals are okay, but they don't add much to the song as basically you guys are singing the same notes. Working out some harmonies would've been more interesting. As for the improvs, I could do without the slides. Too Timmy-like and frankly, I don't like slides in this song. FJ - you did a nice job on them; but I don't even like when Timmy does them. Maybe the fact that Fire's slides are less "in your face" make them tolerable to me... Jam on the end sounds good, but it then it just dies at 6:33...
As for my entry. First off it's in standard tuning which makes it a bit different sounding. From listening to the other entries, one thing is clear: I need to re-learn this thing in drop-D. I was hoping to add a bass and lead track, but I ran out of time. Not sure it would've been anything that could compete with some of the other improvs anyways. I'm happy with the sound and mostly satisfied with the vocals. Most of this song is in my range, and I normally let a little more loose on it than I did here. The third chorus after the jam I thought was pretty good though.
All that aside. I must say that I'm pretty obliged to have received as many top 3 votes that I have. I had fun with this one...
