***CRUSH COVER CONTEST VOTING***

Unread post by Brock » Sun Oct 12, 2003 2:48 am

Ladies and gentlemen....

The polls have now opened for the Crush Cover Contest.

Sadly, I apparently had a few bugs in my system that we did not catch earlier, so we'll be doing a post-based system.

Please follow the directions listed on the page and here:
  • Attempt to ignore any differences in sound quality as best you can; not all of us can afford expensive equipment.
  • Listen to all entries before voting.
Please list your first, second, and third place choices after listening to all entries in a post in this thread in order to be counted.

Okay, let's kick this off then:

1st place - Me. :D For two important reasons: 1) nobody else will and 2) At a tiny 1MB I deliver far more Rocking/MB than any of the other entrants.

2nd place - Roastbeef

3rd place - Firedancer

Voting: *If there are any late entries, I'll edit my post if necessary.

1. Philip (Firedancer)
2. AppJack
3. Geekmug

Comments:

Bedurndurn - I liked the sound of your voice, though it was off key in a few places. Great job for 1MB...thats hard to work with. Nice cover man.

Roastbeef - Good quality recording. This one was pretty sound...I was kind of expecting another guitar track from you though. Out of time or what man?

AppJack - Good job on this one guys...I know joint efforts require a little more skill than going at it solo. The harmonies made me think you guys were big pussies, but in a good way. I liked the second guitar tracks. The volume seemed to jump a bit on them, but hey, I cant mix for shit so who am I to talk?

Philip - Is it any shock youre at #1 for me? Great voice, great fills/solos. I'm always impressed by your stuff man...you've got a damn bright future ahead of you, as long as you dont start a christian rock band. Juuuuussst kidding man. Great job.

Geekmug - Your guitar work was pretty damn solid. It was up there with the best. I liked your end jam the best out of all of them, and thats why you made my podium. The vocals sort of slid in and out of key, otherwise you wouldve placed higher for me.

Good job to all who entered. I'm a big bitch and didnt do this one, mostly cause I'm lazy. (Though I did just record a Ben Harper/Verve cover that I'll post as soon as the contest dies down.) Kudos to all of you.
- Michael

1. Roastbeef: probably the most consistent of all of them, even though your voice still sound like you are pinching a loaf

2. Appfro: i vote for the stuff apps did, not me

3. geekmug: solid playing as always, but your voice still hasn't got any better, towards the end it sounded like you were strangling a cat

and im not voting for phil not because i dont want him to win, but because he could have done a lot better. his voice has developed a lot since then and he was just being lazy by not recording another version

Adding a poll would make only first-place votes count, and I don't really want that. I'll be updating the numbers as we go along.

1. Appfro - why??? cause i put way too much work into this to not vote for myself. This crap wasn't easy.

2. Fire - consistant, good voice and good guitar playing.

3. Roast - it was hard to choose btw you two, the only reason i chose fire is because i liked his voice a little bit more. but just a little bit :D

rhythm guitar - fire
vocals - me (honestly, im not self-centered or anything)
lead guitar - i have to say toss up btw fire's slide stuff and fatjack's slide stuff. that crap is hard.

I'm glad there were at least 5 entries here anyway. It would've been very interesting if everyone pulled through on it though... I took my time listening to each of these and most of my comments below were written as I listened. Sorry for being so long-winded. As for my votes, well I struggled on a few things. Fire - it would've been nice if you came through with a new one. Not like there was much room for improvement, but I'm sure if you redid the vocals, you could've made it basically perfect. Secondly, not sure that it was fair to include a collab among single performers, but there was no "rule" against it... Finally, I'm not pretentious enough to vore for my own entry, but anyways, here are my votes/comments:

1 - Fire - well, most of us have heard this before, but nevertheless, it's just fucking awesome (and note, I rarely drop the F-bomb). A few misses on the vocals so if there was anything you should've redone for this contest it was maybe the vocals. The fact that you're not much more than half my age speaks volumes on your talent though. But you already knew that, right?

2 - bedurndurn - cool little bass mimic in the intro and very listenable outro, even as one guitar. Vocals are on key and confident sounding (you sound relaxed and like you're having fun). Sounds like your voice needs some time to develop to reach its full potential however. You're playing the song a bit quick though and there are some tempo problems here and there. Obviously, a one track (singing while playing) entry though so for that you get some major props. A better quality recording would do wonders for demostrating your talent. Nice job (especially for 1 MB)!

3 - geekmug - the guitar work and mix was awesome. The vocals, well, need a lot of work. The sound of your voice is not bad, but you were off key more than you were on. Perhaps it's a limited range, but there were parts where I think you could've hit the right notes and you didn't. Hey, screw it, you weren't ashamed to try, right? The guitar work, again was VERY impressive; so much so that I can overlook the misses on the vocals. I'd love to sing over that for you sometime...

Apps/FJ - Nice job on the collab guys although it gets a little jumbled at 2:30 - 2:50. Nice vocals Apps. Very smoothing. You over-pronounced some words, but nice job overall and very solid. I think with some better recording equipment your vocals could really shine! The backup vocals are okay, but they don't add much to the song as basically you guys are singing the same notes. Working out some harmonies would've been more interesting. As for the improvs, I could do without the slides. Too Timmy-like and frankly, I don't like slides in this song. FJ - you did a nice job on them; but I don't even like when Timmy does them. Maybe the fact that Fire's slides are less "in your face" make them tolerable to me... Jam on the end sounds good, but it then it just dies at 6:33...

As for my entry. First off it's in standard tuning which makes it a bit different sounding. From listening to the other entries, one thing is clear: I need to re-learn this thing in drop-D. I was hoping to add a bass and lead track, but I ran out of time. Not sure it would've been anything that could compete with some of the other improvs anyways. I'm happy with the sound and mostly satisfied with the vocals. Most of this song is in my range, and I normally let a little more loose on it than I did here. The third chorus after the jam I thought was pretty good though.

All that aside. I must say that I'm pretty obliged to have received as many top 3 votes that I have. I had fun with this one...
