Cool Edit Question
Okay, so I just got this new mic for xmas and i wanted to test it out..it sounds really good but cool edit does not play it back loud at all. I can almost barely hear it. that was the case even before i got this new mic too..so i'm thinking it's either settings in my computer or in cool edit. anyone have any recommendations?

Hey Whit, Merry Christmas. If you're plugging directly into your computer's soundcard mic input, then it's most likely your recording levels in the Volume Control. Open up your Volume Control, go to "Options," then "Properties," then change "Adjust Volume for . . ." from Playback to Recording, then look underneath and make sure there's a check next to "microphone," then click OK. Now it will display your levels for recording, and crank them up, that should help. If you're using an external audio interface, like a USB device or something, it may be the input level on that thing too, or a combination of both. Again, Merry Christmas, and GET ME MY TRACKS!!!
Later Whit.

Whit, you got a USB mic right?
If that's the case, then it isn't anything to do with your sound card like it might be otherwise.
Check the manual maybe? It may have some sort of switch or something for high-gain situations that got engaged and now it's not picking up you.
Other than that, I'm without ideas. I don't know how to raise input gain on a USB port.
Also, what Kahn is saying is correct. Both the Shure SM57 and SM58 are extremely popular dynamic microphones. These do not need phantom power and will malfunction if given it. Condensor microphones need phantom power and will not do anything without it.

No I don't believe they are. Most come from the pre amp/mixer you are going into. Also I should have elaborated by saying what Slimer said, I wan't sure what type of mic she had, I was assuming a condenser because that is what I use and I would get the same results if I didn't power them. Your right though not all mics should be phantom powered.Kahn wrote:dont phantom power all mics though. If they are not meant to be it can really screw it up. I know the SM 57 should NOT be.eliot1171 wrote:Most mics preform better when they are phantom powered, louder and the such.

I have a Samson CO1U USB Studio Condenser mic. I thought this thing would record so loudly and pick up sound from a mile away. Why isn't it doing this? Do I need to buy something else for it?eliot1171 wrote:No I don't believe they are. Most come from the pre amp/mixer you are going into. ....or should I buy an entirely different mic? Are those Shure 57 and 58 mics good for vocals/guitar/piano?
