"Ordinary People" cover

Unread post by horsmar15 » Tue Nov 29, 2005 8:37 pm

I decided to record a cover of John Legend's "Ordinary People". Its a different kind of song for me, but I like it so much I had to try. The guitar is a little soft because it was recorded all in one live track. Other than that hopefully you like my arrangement of the song. Feel free to criticize and if anyone wants chords or a tab I would be glad to post.

very good, I'm not familiar with the original but that sounded very solid. Guitar is great, no noticeable slipups, but the best part is the vocals, very strong and powerful.

My only critique is the actual recording, It sounds very thin. If there is any way you can add some warmth to the tone of it, it would be great. I dont know your setup but like you said the vocals kind of drown out the guitar. Record them separate and play with the mix, add a little reverb and cut out the mic hiss and you would be set.

If you use cool edit pro, http://www.dmbtabs.com/tutorial should get you started

Good job overall
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

thanks for the response. As for my setup, it sucks. I have the dell mic that came with my computer and cool edit pro. I always record in one track because I use the recording to simulate a live performance. Could you suggest a realitively inexpensive mic (lets say 75 to 150) that sounds good?

That's a really good mic for a hunch.

I use a Shure SM58 which is a great live mic. Its only 99 dollars and does the trick for just about anything, though its best for vocals. the auidio technica in the link above looks interesting, but I am wary of any condenser mics priced like that. One thing to think about is a really really good mic, like a neumann can bring out imperfections in your voice because they are so sensitive. Your best bet is to try a few out. Also check out the mic comparison thread. i think its stickied

Thanks for replies on the mic, I will check out the mic comparison thread.

As far as the tab goes, I got these chords off of a forum doing a google search:
Verse & Chorus:

BbMaj7 - EbMaj7 - FMaj7

Bridge:

Bbm7 - Eb9 - FMaj

In order for me to sing it correctly i needed to play each chord a step and a half down. I just used a simple fingerstyle pattern on the chords.
