Sometime last week I made a thread in nDMB titled "A sudden realization," which remarked on how I noticed my parents getting much older these days [thread: http://www.dmbtabs.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=25459 ]. In it, Mitch (apps) suggested that I write a song about the experience. I had actually been thinking about doing so, and over this past weekend, sat down and wrote one.
It's about walking out that Saturday morning during my brief visit and seeing my mom reading. Growing up, she was always running around doing something... cleaning, laundry, fixing food, yardwork, whatever. In all seriousness, she never sat still until it was time to go to bed. So it came as a surprise to me to see her relaxing and reading. This song is about the one brief moment where I stopped and saw her doing so. It really is something the way one small moment in time can make you think so many thoughts.
The title of the song is "Spring Way," which is the street I grew up on and where my parents still live today.
I fear that this song is too sappy, but I tried to write it in as matter-of-fact manner as I could, because that's the way this feeling came off to me. Usually my writing is a little more poetic, a little more vague. This one is fairly direct and while it's sort of an aversion from my normal style, I am happy with it and don't want to change it.
Here are the lyrics:
i walked out this morning
saw you reading in your kitchen chair
i thought you might be out working
but somehow i knew that you'd be there
still, it came without warning
as i stopped for a moment and stared
through the eyes of my younger days
upon your fragile hands and graying hair
you lifted your head and smiled
and softly spoke my name
some things they can't help but change
and some things stay the same
and some things stay the same
on spring way we all stay the same

Be excellent to one another.
Be excellent to one another.
it is sappy. no denying it. but i think it fits the moment very well. when i said something about you writing a song about it, in my head the song was a lot like the one you wrote. sometimes sappy is the way the message has to be brought across.
anyway, what i'm saying is that i like it. the lyrics are solid. maybe a little too straight forward for my taste (few if any metaphores), but there was still a little room for imagination.
i like the guitar piece. as simple as it was it went perfect w/ the mood, the lyrics, everything.
i think my favorite part of the whole thing is the last part. the "and some things stay the same." i don't know how to explain what i'm trying to say, but i expected when the song got to that part, for the line to fit in the song one way, and you drew it out so that it took longer. i love it when i'm wrong when i predict the way a song is going to go cause to me, it adds originality and adds something i haven't heard 40 times in other songs.
all around on this one. I won't even comment on your voice cause you know what i have to say about that
phenomenal recording again though. studio quality.

That was great. Seriously. That was awesome.
I tip my hat to anyone who can say to themselves 'Ok i'm gonna write a song about this' and then finish it. I just cant seem to do that. I can only ever write in the spur of the moment. Anyway.
Sure it's sappy but like Apps said, it fits. Great song.
This part reminds me of Older Chests:
some things they can't help but change
and some things stay the same
