beginner at recording, can anyone give me some tips?

sorry to sound dumb, but i have been playing guitar for a few years and obviously i've seen many of your recordings here, and all over the net, but can someone give me some tips of how to get some home recordings vocals/iguitar,mabye a piano, on the net or however is the way/ways some of guys do it. The only things I've heard is you can download recorder programs to ur computer with ur guitar plugged in to an amp, then into a computer, but that can't pick of vocals can it? Also would there be any to get some recordings of an audio tape on the computer? Anyway you guys do it or can help me by giving me some tips to get recordings up on the net would be a great help.
