recording help

I plugged my guitar into the LINE IN and it's only recording into the left channel. How can I fix this?

what program are you using? try plugging into the mic port.

im not familiar with cool edit, but it may be something in the programs settings about input source...

but if anybody has any ideas about how I can get the line in to work that would be splendid

go into your volume control...the balance for Line-in is probably all the way to the left

You have a mono adapter. That's how it is. Actually, I don't know why mine always recorded in both channels on my computer when I recorded like that. However, when I plug into a different device, like a video camera, it only comes through in the left channel.

You could just make the track mono.

Yeah I was gonna say that. Just go to Radio Shack and drop $3 on a stereo adapter.

just another quick question: it works in the mic port, is that because the mic records in mono or something?

Is there a way to record in stereo, like from the outputs of a mixer. I have an rca to stereo 1/8" adapter but it still records in mono.

If your recording one source (mic) then it's mono. The only reason to record in stereo is if you have two sources i.e. mic/pickup. However, if you're recording multiple parts and panning them then you'd want to mix to stereo.
You should be able to switch the track properties to mono. Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with Cool Edit so I don't know the exact steps. Check out the manual, that should tell you whats up.

That would split your mono signal to stereo. Stereo reverb, for example, splits the signal and applys reverb to each side to give a stereo effect. You're still recording a mono signal. Don't assume that stereo=better, it just means that the right and left channels are independant of one another.
There are ways to give a percieved stereo effect if you only have one recording source. You could duplicate the mono track and put it on a sperate track. Then add reverb to one and a subtle delay to the other. It works but it doesn't compare to a bona fied stereo recording.
