Most people naturally have a talking voice and a singing voice. Take Dave for instance... he has a multitude of singing voices that are quite different from his, ironically enough, multiple talking voices.
Note the changes in the voice on songs like #41 to Last Stop to Watchtower to Ants Marching. He just changes the air flow and the intonation he puts on words and the such.
I have 2 or 3 different singing voices as songs require. They are generally a little more throaty than my talking voice and I definitely push a lot more air through, it's a bit raspy.

As to the original question, start by singing in your natural voice (this does not mean your speaking voice), then find the variants. Work on getting a good natural tone first though before you go too crazy. This is important because ideally vocals should come out easily with little to no strain on your neck muscles. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but use it as a starting point. You'll find that singing with good tone comes easily and singing with bad tone takes more physical effort.

Dont worry about singing like som-one else...I think when people try to make their music sound like another persons music that its just weird. Give your voice your own flavor and that will make you different from everyone else. Look at Neil Young...His voice sucks...but it's original! Plus singing like some one else will strain your voice (even though you think it isn't) and you could have problems later in life.
