Writng Songs Tips PLEASE!!!

Unread post by VTDreaminwithDMB » Wed Jul 09, 2003 9:14 am

:D I just wanted to know what special tips anyone has about certain things they do to help them write songs. I always come up with cool hooks but never finish a whole song.

Complete Amatuers standpoint:
Start writing down the things you are thinking and a format may start to arise, or fit the hook(vocally) into a rhythm/riff you 've been working on, and then move outwardly from there. Sometimes I start with the first line and the rest just comes.....hook and all, and sometimes I start with a concept/hook and build around it. A lot of the time I have the guitar part worked out, partially at least, and then I go with what I'm feeling at the time, and sing a part or a line i've been thinking about, hopefully it fits, if not, I modify it or try another line....and then the rest just comes out.....it's not always good first run, but the structure has been established and a few good lines are there. When I am working on a song I am constantly thinking about the lines and changing them so that they sound good and fit well into the concept and rhythm of the song. Basically, people say to write down everything....everything pertaining to what you are writing about(concept), ideas, storys, phrases, sayings, etc., and then try and put it together from their. I usually have a structure right away, and write one line at a time and most of the ideas are in my head or jump out as i go along, and then I tweek it as I play it over and over.

Good luck

there is no set way of writing music...soemthing I try to do is try my hardest to not settle for anything but what sounds completely NEW and original from others work...try to make it stand out...I usually find something I like to play...record it...listen to it...record other tracks over it, and kinda let it "air out" and evolve itself...writing is like using your ability to harnes a song and let it grow itself...don't puss it...just my 2 cents...
