If you are recording with just a guitar you can use a quarter inch cable to an eigth inch with an adapter into your sound card. You can buy the adapter at radio shack. I've done a lot of recording with this and my guitar and the quality is amazing.

Get a better mic. There's a bunch of $100 studio mics that sound great for the money. Check out M-Audio, Studio Projects, and Rode.

why not just record through my amp cause spending more money on a mixer and cable will cost a lot more. does using a mixer have much better quality?
