Wow, that C1 really sounds great. The modified Neumann was best in those tests, but the C1 was second, I thought, over even the regular Neumann.

And supposedly it's great on vocals, too... hmm... I wonder what it's like on piano...

Went to Guitar Center today and saw the Boss BR-532. It looked pretty sexy there on display. I think I'm going to worry about a better guitar before one of these though.

I think I've figured out what recording unit I want: the Boss BR 1180. Now I've just got to figure out the mics...

The great thing about the 1180 is that it's 2 XLR inputs have preamps and phantom power. Less to lug around, and when you look at purchasing individual pre's for mics with the 532 for example, the 1180 doesn't really cost you much more...

remember, you are relying that the preamps on the unit are good enough for your needs. not all preamps are alike. they range from $10 to $2500 for preamps. preamps in mixers usually are not clear.

i think youll have a much better sound if you spend your money on a solid condenser mike (ex. marshall mxl v67) and a solid preamp, and record into your computer through an audiophile 2496 sound card. you can get unbelievable sounds with that--especially with the processing power of a computer. with a unit like the boss, you are probably gonna spend alot of money and get a crap mike, and the boss unit probably has poor converters, so your music will sound bad. how are the editing features on the boss unit? cause im telling you that with a computer, you have endless options of editing and compressing, especially with a good program like dp3, or cubase, or protools, which you can always buy in the future. with a good mic, a good pre, and a good sound card, you can grow. with that boss unit you are stuck if it sucks. start with a simple system and build it. i dont know what type of quality you are looking to have, but if you want solid quality, stick to the system i mentioned. finally, dont ever buy gear from guitar center or a large chain if you can avoid it, they mark up their prices by at least 10%. find a local music store that's privately owned--you will save big time.

This is how i started:

large condenser mic $200 Marshall MXL V69
Mic Pre $100 Art
Sound Card $120 Audiophile 2496
Computer Program $50 Music Center Pro/ Cool Edit

and sound forge...gives about $500...and you will have a surprising sound that i would put up against that boss unit anyday.

I agree that a computer setup would sound much better and would cost less, but I think he wanted to travel with it, so...
I just got my mic(AT 3035) tonight and it sounds amazing, i definately suggest it.

I would never buy anything besides pics and strings at a local music store. I have worked at them in the past and they are much more expensive and (in my experience) you can't trust them at all. Now there are some nice mom & pop music stores that will give you a fair deal, but they are hard to find anymore.
I wouldn't suggest anything too big like musiciansfriend, or guitar center either, But a good specialized "mid-sized" company are great.

again check out:
sweetwater-for recording gear
elderly- for acoustic instruments

Yeah, I definitely want to be able to move this thing around. If I just had a derned lap top, I'd get an MBox.

I have always planned on getting good mics, and from what I hear, the Roland mini studios are actually really good quality wise. This definitely isn't something where I'm going all out on a flashy console and then skipping the costs on the microphones.
