What makes us so elite?

Unread post by Dancing Ants » Fri Jan 23, 2004 9:05 am

Have you ever noticed how about 95% of musicians around here and in life are usually very elitist about their music and certain types of music? Why is it that if you don't play an extremely complicated lick, you are looked at as a bad guitarist? I don't understand that...I mean, you play are freaking musical instrument...it isn't the end of the world..

Im with you buddy, Id rather hear someone play three chords and move me than watch someone masturbate on a solo for an hour everytime. But, if I took the time to master all that scale work for playing complex lead, Id probably have a pretty big head too.

ok man...where did you ever hear that if you play a hard song you are elite? the true measure is a guitaist who can play on any guitar. i could play eruption with a $30 guitar from wal-mart. that is how you rate yourself. by how well you can play on a guitar that is not in your favor "performance-wise"

When I was 13, guitar masterbation was impressive.

Don't get me wrong, I fully apprectiate people like Steve Vai, but I also can appreciate someone that moves me with three chords or one note.

Lately, it'a all about my ears and feeling. Playing 1 zillion notes with no feeling or style sucks as much as one note. I can pick out what I like pretty easily and quickly.

I think as you get older, you settle into 'what you like.' And you defend it. It's pretty simple. I've learned that instead of saying something sucks ass, I simply say it's not my thing, and people are less prone to argue.

as do i, but i'm so tired of people who can't get over the fact that everyone likes something different. . .it's more important why you play than what you play.

When I was in High School it was all about playing loud & fast with as much distortion as possible. If you couldn't rip off runs at 90 miles an hour you weren't shit! You had to impress people. Now I get more satisfaction out of improving and playing stuff accurately than I ever did blowing out my eardrums in a metal band!

Think of this, some of the greatest songs come from the simplest chords..
Dylans watchtower
Poisons every rose
Petty- almost any song
The first song i ever learned to play was rockin in a free world and thats a great song, even Pearl Jam plays that live, thats saying something about being simple..

Those are awesome songs that anyone can play.. There simply yet perfect..

a complicated song makes you look better to an uneducated listener. i played the stone this one time at a show and i fucked it up so bad at a couple points, i was really nervous. but eveyone was like "wow, that was awesome, wicked cool finger work man", and then i'll play something like i'll back you up, and i hit it perfect, every vocal, strum, emotion, and they still like the stone better.
but as long as you can put feeling into the song, then anysong is just as impressive.
i think an almost perfect Some Devil is more impressive than an almost perfect tripping billies.

I'm all for the simple good stuff...... a couple things to think about:
When musicians get older, their solo's usualy become less complex in terms of speed, but usually their solo's are just as good. I think this is because they've masted a difficult art. Playing simple stuff that is still meaningful. Something that goes unseen is how well tim reynolds can strum some simple chords right insync with dave... impressive, and it sounds really good. A ton of great guitarist play simple stuff and it goes unseen (Even some of daves stuff: Trouble, Proudest Monkey..)
Sonmetimes I would try to catch her, but I never even caught her name.....

I love simple music as well, but I think when you are writing music sometimes you want to sorta invent and explore how far you can go on guitar. And sometimes thats where alot of great creative music comes from.
and yea speed contests are dumb, because it dosnt show much. There will always be someone faster than you and there will always be some one slower than you too-

I dont understand what sense this makes, if I can play good music on a cheap guitar I am an elite amazing guitarist. Its not like I wouldnt be able to play anything I know now on a shitty guitar. And you cant make it sound good if its just a shitty guitar, what are you talking about.
